**Position Type**:Postdoctoral fellowship

**Salary**:This is currently a 1-year position with a salary of $65,000 plus benefits, a stipend of $5,000 to cover direct research expenses, and an excellent chance of extension into a multi-year position. MITACS funding is a strong possibility, but the position will be supported by Wilfrid Laurier University until MITACS is secured.

**Start Date**: Flexible, but September 2023 is preferred.

**Reports to**: Dr. Matthew Scrafford (WCS Canada) and Dr. Frances Stewart (Wilfrid Laurier University)

**Position Summary**

**Position Objectives**

Model how forest management in Ontario affects wolverine habitats and populations and provide management recommendations to protect wolverines.

**Primary Responsibilities**
- Use spatial tools and landcover data sets (e.g., Patchworks) to create a long-term model of the Ontario boreal forest resulting from landscape-level caribou habitat management.
- Quantify how landscape-level caribou habitat management affects wolverine habitats and populations.
- Identify sources of uncertainty and criticisms of model outputs in consultation with a scientific advisory committee.
- Explore and recommend how forest management and recovery can be coordinated for both wolverine and boreal caribou.

**Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience**
- PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. ecology, forestry, environmental science, computer science)
- Knowledge of wildlife ecology, population management and conservation.
- Experience presenting to multi-stakeholder groups and a competitive list of first-authored publications.
- Proficiency with R, Git, and species distribution models are assets.
- Interest in operating at the conservation science-policy interface; direct experience is an asset.

**Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Experience**
- Knowledge of boreal wildlife ecology including caribou, wolves, or wolverines.
- Knowledge of forest management and species at risk policy in Ontario.
- Prior experience with predictive modeling methods and integrated ecological modelling platforms.
- Prior experience using Patchworks data.
