Postdoctoral Fellowship in Qualitative Health

**Position summary**:
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost cardiovascular health centre dedicated to understanding, treating, and preventing heart disease. The Division of Prevention and Rehabilitation has a unique array of initiatives and programs, with a particular emphasis on innovative approaches to preventing (primary and secondary) and managing cardiovascular disease.
This postdoctoral fellowship affords the opportunity to gain and contribute knowledge to the area of cardiac prevention and rehabilitation using qualitative research methods. This fellowship is ideally suited to an individual who wishes to pursue a path in research, program evaluation, knowledge translation, or health education. The incumbent would be involved in several qualitative research projects spanning multiple disciplines, including education, cardiac rehabilitation, health promotion, and women’s heart health.
Current research projects include:
- **Young Hearts** - qualitative interviews with children of parents with cardiovascular disease, which will direct the development of child-friendly resources
- **Co-Bereave** - qualitative interviews and Delphi study with bereaved caregivers to assist in the design of community bereavement supports (in conjunction with The Ottawa Hospital and Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital)
- **CHOICE** - qualitative interviews and focus groups as part of a scientific evaluation of the suite of cardiac rehabilitation programs offered at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
- **EXCEED** - qualitative interviews to evaluate an exercise program delivered virtually to women with cardiovascular disease
- Various knowledge synthesis (e.g., systematic review of interventions designed to support children and parents with a chronic physical illness) and quality improvement projects using qualitative methods (e.g., exploring patient-centered knowledge dissemination practices, gaps, and needs at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute).
**Responsibilities**:
**Requirements**:
- A PhD in a health-related (e.g., health sciences, health studies, nursing) or social science discipline (e.g., psychology, sociology, education) from a recognized, accredited program
- Previous experience investigating health-or social science-related topics using methods such as interviewing and conducting focus groups
- Experience analyzing textual data using established qualitative methodologies, with support from relevant QDA software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti)
- Experience in the preparation and publication of manuscripts based on qualitative data
- Experience conducting interviews or focus groups on sensitive topics with individuals from equity-deserving groups or vulnerable populations is considered an asset
- Experience conducting systematic literature reviews is an asset
**Competencies**:
- Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent technical writing skills in English
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment
- Excellent computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, EndNote, SPSS)
**Other qualifications**:
- Bilingualism (French and English) is considered an asset
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required
- The fellow is expected to be present in Ottawa, but hybrid-work may be possible as agreed upon by their supervisor. Office space at the UOHI will be provided.
