The Faculty of Health Sciences ((FHS) is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres. The Faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).

The Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing will educate nurses who are reflective practitioners and provide recognized leadership in nursing theory, research, practice, inter-professional health teaching and learning, and policy advancements.

The Principal Investigator leads a large, externally funded research program focused on understanding the health and social impacts of chronic pain in vulnerable populations. COPE II is a CIHR-funded ethnographic study that aims to understand the experiences of patients with low socio-economic status with chronic pain. The purpose of the study is to better understand existing gaps between clinical understandings of medical complexity and the social complexity of patients’ lives.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research Manager will directly support the Principal Investigator’s ongoing research program, contributing to the design and conduct of ongoing and planned studies. The incumbent will provide support for data analysis, manuscript and report preparation, and wider knowledge mobilization activities with a range of stakeholders, as directed by the Principal Investigator. The Research Associate will coordinate ongoing activities with the larger team, including staff and collaborators at Western and other universities (particularly University of Toronto), and contribute to the supervision and training of Graduate Research Assistants. The incumbent will support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities as requested, develop research and project plans, and design, build and run experiments.

**Education**:

- Master’s Degree in Health or Social Science discipline (e.g. sociology, anthropology, public health, health studies, women and gender studies, equity studies or related discipline), with a focus on one or more of the following: critical qualitative research, ethnography, social theory, social determinants of health, Health Equity or closely related areas of study
- PhD in Health or Social Science discipline (sociology, anthropology, public health, health studies, women and gender studies, equity studies or related discipline), with a focus on one or more of the following: critical qualitative health research, ethnography, social theory, social determinants of health, Health Equity or closely related areas of study is preferred

**Experience**:

- 3 years’ experience conducting research related to critical qualitative health research, ethnography, social theory, social determinants of health, health, health equity or closely related areas of study; preferably in an academic setting
- 3 years’ experience writing reports, proposals, academic papers
- Previous experience in all stages of qualitative research
- Record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas is preferred
- Experience working in inter-disciplinary teams of researchers is preferred
- Previous experience in knowledge mobilization strategies is preferred

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:

- Demonstrated knowledge of critical qualitative health research, ethnography, social theory, social determinants of health, health, health equity or closely related areas of study
- Demonstrated knowledge of research principles, theory and methods (qualitative approaches)
- Superior writing skills and knowledge of the publication process with demonstrated expertise leading and contributing to peer-review publications
- Advanced level skill in qualitative data analysis
- Well-organized and flexible with the ability to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities and able to meet deadlines
- Solid judgement and ethical conduct including the ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and discretion
- Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to develop effective, professional, mutually beneficially relationships with varied stakeholders (e.g. academics, students, service providers, policy makers)
