**Job Summary**:
The position will act as a resource to the faculties and to the larger research enterprise to navigate the new and changing requirements from domestic and international government bodies and regulations regarding national security guidelines and research and commercialization partnerships. Further, the position will serve as a centralized support for identifying and mitigating theft, interference, unwanted or unintended transfer of knowledge and other security threats as it relates to the research and commercialization activities of the university.

This position will support the university’s research mission and provide significant content and process expertise through management of risk identification and mitigation measures. They will also support and guide the Office of Research Services and the Vice-President, Research, and Innovation on matters of research security. This role has an extensive knowledge of federal and provincial research security guidelines and requirements (eg. Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern, National Security Guidelines for Research Partnership) and compliance with institutional policies and procedures. In addition, the position will have a role in university programs related to export control, controlled goods, nuclear security, security clearances and background checks, cybersecurity, physical and digital access controls, etc.

**Responsibilities/accountabilities**:
**Research Security Leadership**
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the operational direction of Ontario Tech University’s Safeguarding Research program based on a high level of understanding of best practices in research security issues.
- Responsible for advising the Executive Director, Office of Research Services and the university community on external threats and other matters of research security.
- Responsible for acting as the designated contact/security officer for university, as required for compliance with various security programs and university regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and regularly updating the research security program to address evolving government research security requirements.
- Responsible for interpreting and advising on policy, procedures, laws and regulations related to research security and provide advice on the security components included in sponsored research.

**Administrative Leadership**
- Responsible for developing due diligence policies, vetting procedures and mechanisms for open-source intelligence gathering for Ontario Tech University to safeguard research.
- Responsible for supporting the development of research risk assessments and the creation of mitigation plans for quality and compliance with granting agency regulations.
- The position will liaise with other units within Ontario Tech University and specifically with team members in the Office of Research Services to develop coordinated research security compliance mechanism and vetting processes.
- Builds and oversees the process for developing/implementing identification and mitigation strategies for complex files on sensitive areas of research or partners.
- Monitor and identify developments and issues related to research security to mitigate risks to research and commercialization enterprise. Remain apprised of and develop initiatives to respond to emerging threats.

**Record Retention**:

- ** **Responsible for developing and implementing record retention practices in accordance with university standards, privacy regulations, security compliance programs and any other applicable laws or regulations.

**Training, Education and Outreach** Responsible for developing and implementing training and awareness programs for researchers and other staff at Ontario Tech University regarding research security.

**Required Skills**:

- Strong knowledge of Canadian Safeguarding Research standards and regulations (i.e. Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern, National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships, Export Controls, Data Management Strategy, Cyber Security Plans)
- Knowledge of controlled goods, export controls and other security and compliance driven programs in Canada.
- Interpret complex guidelines, regulations, and policies (both internal and external) and provide answers to researchers and other staff based on critical assessment and gathered input.
