The Strategy and Market Access Division is responsible for the department’s strategic direction with a focus on energy security and market access, climate policy, development of a lower carbon natural gas value chain and clean energy investment attraction. It is also responsible for the policy and legislative coordination process and agencies, boards, and commissions.

The Energy Information and Analysis Branch (EIA) provides economic analysis, market intelligence and consistency of information to support Alberta's energy policy and fiscal planning. The branch is also responsible for assessing the impact of policies and energy trends on resource development. The Branch has two main groups:

- The Energy Markets and Research group monitors global energy market trends, conducts research, and examines the implications on Alberta's energy industry. The team is responsible for the development of price forecasts for the provincial budget and analysis to support policy development.
- The Economics and Energy Information group conducts analysis on the value of Alberta's resources to support policy development. The team is responsible for production forecasts for the provincial budget, royalty related analysis and is the trusted source for energy statistics.

The Manager, Market Fundamentals position resides within the Energy Markets and Research group.

The Manager, Market Fundamentals has the responsibility of providing direction and supervision to a team of professionals responsible for conducting economic, fundamental, and financial analysis and research on Alberta's energy resources. The role is responsible for supervising research on short and long energy trends for oil sands, conventional oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, refined products, renewable energy, and energy transition related topics. The Market Fundamentals team is the department's information experts related to energy market dynamics. It is also responsible for the delivery and analysis of energy related statistics and information for use by internal and external stakeholders, often in support of business development or policy development initiatives.

- Knowledge of the principles of economics, finance, statistics, financial modeling techniques, and business decision making.
- Knowledge of the energy sector, and the principles and procedures underlying the fiscal frameworks for Alberta’s oil sands, conventional oil and gas, coal, and emerging resources, and those of competing jurisdictions.
