**About Us**:
As the academic commons of Western University, Western Libraries provides the library and archival expertise and infrastructure - information resources, technology, people, and spaces - required to cultivate and mobilize knowledge, and accelerate excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship.

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), founded at Western University in 2017 with the support of social impact fund ImpactWX, aims to better detect tornado occurrence throughout Canada, improve severe and extreme weather understanding and prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change.

The Northern Hail Project (NHP) was founded in 2022 at Western University with financial support from the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, the NSERC Alliance - Mitacs Accelerate Grants program, and Western University’s Strategic Priorities fund. NHP aims to improve knowledge of damaging hail storms and the detection of hail occurrence across Canada.

**Responsibilities**:
The Technical Specialist also works closely with the GIS Specialist to provide high quality map and geospatial services to the Western user community. The Technical Specialist works in collaboration with faculty, researchers, and students to support their research and facilitate the achievement of their research objectives within Geographic Information Systems and Science

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- 3-year University Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Geography or other disciplines that provide training in GIS, cartography, or geomatics
- College diploma in GIS would be an asset

**Experience**:

- 2 years of experience using GIS software and providing customer service
- Previous experience within a GIS position in a relevant research or academic environment is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Knowledge of tornado classification and rating procedures used by the Northern Tornadoes Project & Northern Hail Project preferred
- In-depth knowledge of GIS and digital cartography data and demonstrated proficiency with the Esri suite of software
- Experience with current Esri software: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online (Survey123, Dashboards, Story Maps), Server for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Enterprise)
- Experience working as an ArcGIS Online Organization Administrator
- Experience analyzing and processing raster mosaic datasets within the ArcGIS Server environment
- Ability to collect and discern relevant data to create and interpret reports
- Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the NTP/NHP teams and the University community
- Decision making and problem-solving skills to resolve complex technical issues
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments within the GIS field
- Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and provide feedback
- Verbal and written communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users with demonstrated training skills both one-on-one and in a group setting
- Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
- Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
