Job Summary

Dr. Hirst’s Laboratory is located in the Network Centre of Excellence building on the UBC Point Grey campus and is affiliated with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Michael Smith Laboratories in the Faculty of Science, and the BC Cancer Research Institute.

Organizational Status

The Research Manager will:

- Report to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Martin Hirst
- Interact closely with the PI and other partners in the research activities (e.g. BC Cancer, BC CDC, faculty and staff at UBC, SFU, UViC, and other institutions worldwide).
- Interact with members of relevant UBC departments and facilities, including the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Office of Research Services, and Financial Services.
- Interact with vendors providing reagents and equipment for genomics research.

Work Performed

Provides technical advice to collaborators including faculty, staff and students from UBC or other institutions, in the area of genomics, molecular biology, and next generation sequencing:

- Provides guidance to experimental design and helps with experimental trouble shooting.
- Provides advice on specimen preparation and quality requirements.
- Works with Project Manager to generate research cost estimates, coordinate and implement research project plans and timelines, and organizes technical assistance where necessary.
- Maintains a knowledge of, and helps to prioritize research projects that are underway.
- Conducts and coordinates research training sessions for students and staff to ensure protocols are understood and followed.
- Reviews literature to identify new technologies and procedural improvement and organizes their testing and implementation.
- Develops new/optimized
- Develops, implements, enforces, and maintains a comprehensive list of standard operating procedures.
- Organize weekly lab research team meetings.
- Attends related meetings and conferences.

Manages day-to-day activities of technical staff, research assistants, graduate and co-op students.
- Supervises and provides direction to research staff and students.
- Provides staff yearly performance reviews and supports training and professional development opportunities for technical staff.
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale, quality/excellence, and teamwork; maximizes the efficiency of the team through strong leadership, organizational, and motivational skills.Mediates and resolves team conflicts.
- Leads planning of laboratory social events and oversee all logistics.
- Arranges travel and accommodation for meetings/conferences for lab personnel.

Manages daily operation of facility
- Develops, implements, coordinates, and oversee the production of next generation sequencing molecular libraries in a high-throughput automated environment.
- Arranges for sample sequencing at various facilities and oversees data analysis with staff bioinformaticians.
- Maintains and tracks laboratory stocks of reagents, mammalian cell cultures and biological samples.
- Directs the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of major equipment, including lab cold storage electronic monitoring system, new state-of-the-art robotic liquid handling, and sequencing instruments (valued in excess of $1,000,000 in the facility).
- Maintenance of Laboratory Information Management System, including sample receipt, tracking, submission, and processing.
