Data Services Specialist

Keeping Ontario’s Legislative Assembly running smoothly takes many talented people, doing many different jobs—from camera operators and committee clerks, to purchasing officers and researchers. The Office of the Assembly is dedicated to serving Ontario’s Parliament.

**What You’ll Do**:
**You’ll act with integrity to**:
- Provide client service to Senior staff and Offices of the Assembly including Members, their staff and Caucus staff and Library clients to ensure Assembly data sets are understandable and meet their information needs.
- Oversee the adoption of methods for data extraction to improve data services, including web scraping, data transformations and data cleansing on behalf of Assembly branches.
- Actively monitor current legislative affairs identifying trends in Parliamentary data practices to ensure Assembly data is being created and used to its full potential.
**You’ll support our collaboration as you**:
- Recommend and lead the implementation of data definitions and data dictionaries that accurately describe the Assembly’s information, as well as research and define the Assembly’s best practices of creating and publishing data sets and models.
- Coordinate with peer institutions, such as other legislative assemblies, on collaborative data strategies and platforms (e.g., Gallopp) to improve the discovery of information.
**How You Qualify**:
**You demonstrate excellence through your**:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Information Management, Information Technology, Computer Science or equivalent, and five or more years’ prior related experience working with data and digital resources, with a focus on the organization and structure.
- Experience in using modern tools to clean and migrate complex information in data formats (e.g., XSLT transformation, web scraping software, Excel).
- Strong knowledge of parliamentary procedure and legislative information.
- Strong knowledge of the best practices, standards and trends in data management, open data, data modelling, and the FAIR data principles.
- Experience managing data platforms including SOLR, DRUPAL and SharePoint.
- Strong client-service skills and strong communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate between technical and non-technical clients.
- Proven data and visualization expertise using software such as PowerBI or Tableau.

- The Office of the Assembly is currently in a flexible workplace pilot program. The program permits employees in certain positions to work up to a maximum of 2 days per week for some of their regular scheduled hours from a mutually agreed upon location away from the office without compromising the efficiency and effectiveness of the Office of the Assembly business or overall service delivery. Employees that are able to participate in the program understand and agree that they must be available, when requested, to be onsite as required and, as such, are required to maintain proximity within commuting distance in Ontario from the Assembly’s formal place of business at the Legislative Precinct in Toronto, Ontario. Employees may be required to return to work in the Legislative Precinct full-time as deemed by the Assembly._
