**PURPOSE**:Reporting to the Director of Early Learning Child & Family Supports, the Family Support Worker will work collaboratively with the ELCFS team to provide support, resources and workshops to build healthy families focusing on children 0 - 6 years of age. Learners can expect to participate in culturally-responsive play-based learning activities. Parents and caregivers discover new ways to support children's learning at home while making valuable connections with others in the community.
- This position is working up to 30-hours per week, fulltime permanent that works in the office, with mínimal local travel as required._

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the First Nations who represent the early learner and their families;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the community: acts as a liaison and advocate for children and families as required;
- Participate in meetings with ELCFS team, Indigenous community partners and parents;
- Develop and implement specific strategies to solve problems affecting 0 - 6-year-old children well
- being within the family;
- Assist families with household management, facilitate their role in the planning process, and support their participation in community resource networks;
- Coordinate sustainable community resources to support the early development of children;
- Promote and facilitate access to formal and informal support networks, such as relatives and friends, peer group, kinship/foster parent organizations, and/or community resources, schools and service agencies;
- Support families in accessing resources and supports located at Malahat Nation and in the broader community;
- Work collaboratively with outside agencies including but not limited too Kwumut Lelum Child and Family Services Early Years Prevention Team, the Cowichan Valley School District Early Years Team, Aboriginal Infant Development and Sundrop Child Development etc.;
- Connect and work collaboratively with local Elders for support on building healthy families;
- Plan and implement workshops, programs and training opportunities for children and families;
- Transport and support children or families to and / or from appointments in authorized vehicles;
- Work collaboratively to plan and implement programs i.e. food security etc.;
- Attend training to continue education;
- May, on occasion, be required to perform other job-related duties as assigned.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Early Childhood Education Assistance (ECEA) certificate required, or a combination of experience and willingness to complete ECEA training
- Minimum Grade 12 is _required_
- Min of 1-year experience working with Indigenous communities preferred specifically families and children 0 - 6 years of age
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture including land-based activities, spiritual understanding, importance of collaboratively working with our elders and familiarity with community preferred.
- Strong understanding of UNDRIP and DRIPA
- CPR and standard First Aid training is required
- Criminal Record Check including vulnerable sector search prior to employment required
- Class 5 BC Driver License with Driver Abstract is required
- Effective December 3, 2021 full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Malahat Nation. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment

- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships with children, youth, and adults while assisting them in development of interpersonal, communication, and essential skills.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain reports, records, statistics and case files.
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues and challenges of working with at risk children, youth, and families.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
