**Scholarship Description**

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and practitioners. To this end, it offers **one** **full-time, five-month term as a Junior Research Scholar (JRS)** **- South Asia **for applicants interested in Canada-South Asia Relations as part of the **Canada-Asia Sustainability Tracker (CAST)**, an exciting new project by the Foundation. CAST is an online, interactive platform for mapping and visualizing developments in the Asia Pacific with respect to specific nodes of Canadian engagement with the region. Focused principally on sustainability and ESG developments, CAST will provide sub-national level data and information on Asian affairs, Asia's two-way engagement with Canada, and related emerging trends.

The JRS will join APF Canada's research team and work directly with a Program Manager to develop the South Asia component of the CAST platform. The JRS will help explore sub-national level events, collect and analyze data pertinent to our understanding of sustainability and ESG developments in the jurisdictions, and provide context around the findings. The position requires the JRS to have an active interest in the region, good research and writing skills, a penchant for investigating issues, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and work in a fast-paced environment. **The JRS should also have proficiency in at least one South Asian language proficiency and the ability to provide an unbiased analysis of events.**

**Successful applicants will have the following qualifications**:

- Understanding and interest in South Asia studies - politics, society, current affairs, international relations, security, environmental issues, and more;
- Proficiency in a South Asian Language
- Educational background in related fields such as Political Science, Commerce, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Asian Studies, or Anthropology, with a demonstrated focus on ESG, sustainability, and/or South Asia;
- Excellent demonstrated skills in conducting secondary research, literature review, and collecting and collating large datasets;
- Excellent demonstrated written communication skills;
- Good ability in synthesizing complex datasets into writing pieces catered to the general public;
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods will be considered an asset;
- Strong teamwork and collaborative skills, ability to adapt, innovate, work in a fast-paced environment, and good interpersonal skills.

**Junior Research Scholar Duties**

The Junior Research Scholar will work under the direct supervision of a Program Manager and engage in the following activities:

- Work with the Foundation's research team on collecting and analyzing information on Canada-South Asia relations;
- Work with the Foundation's research team in collecting and analyzing sub-national level data on sustainability and ESG-related events and developments in South Asia;
- Actively collect, analyze, and write event summaries for the CAST tool;
- Contribute regularly to APF Canada's Asia Watch newsletter;
- Assist with other duties as assigned in support of APF Canada.

The Junior Research Scholar will ideally report out of Vancouver, BC, partly remotely and partly from APF Canada's head office in downtown Vancouver, Monday to Friday, during regular office hours for five days a week. We will consider applicants from across Canada but expect that if successful, the applicant should be either amenable to moving to Vancouver, BC,** or** maintain office hours according to the Pacific time zone.

The grantee's compensation is **$3,300 monthly.**

**Start/End Dates**

We hope to fill this position quickly and have someone start in the role in **Early January until the end May, 2023.**
