Job Summary

The Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy provides the only provincial program for the education of entry-to-practice occupational therapists. Through rigorous scholarly activity, high standards of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) provides a strong foundation that supports the current and future practice of the profession.

The UBC MOT program is one of the leading Occupational Therapy Programs in Canada. The program is fully-distributed and provides students the opportunity to study in state-of-art labs at UBC’s campus in Vancouver, in the Fraser Valley, and at UNBC’s campus in Prince George.

The Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy’s Education Support Tech (EST) provides high-quality, daily classroom and program support for all of the Department's programs at the Point Grey site. The EST will ensure that teaching and learning spaces are set-up for classes by gathering and organizing equipment, ensuring equipment is in working order, and keeping teaching spaces organized and efficient.

This role is also the point of contact and administrator for the learning management system, Canvas. The EST will also provide support to faculty and external instructors in developing and updating curriculum materials for online and distributed education. The incumbent will assist in the implementation of the distributed MOT Program by working with the Associate Head of Academic Affairs and the Administrative Director to develop policies, procedures and training materials related to education technology and curriculum materials for a remote or distributed learning environment.

The EST is required to respond on very short notice and resolve issues that arise in an efficient, calm, and customer-service oriented manner. To fulfil the operational requirements of this position, the incumbent will be required to start work at 8:00 am, must be physically able to lift and move equipment such as therapy beds, clinical equipment, stacked chairs, etc., and work in-person 100% of the time.

The incumbent will also act as a liaison with MEDIT/UBC IT to ensure audio-visual equipment that facilitates learning functions correctly.

Organizational Status

This position works from general directives of the MOT Curriculum Coordinator, and under the direct supervision of the department Administrate Director. The position liaises with faculty, clinical faculty, external instructors, staff, students, the public, and vendors. The incumbent works closely with other university service units such as UBC IT Services, the LT HUB and Faculty of Medicine MedIT as appropriate.

Work Performed

Classroom & Program Support:

- Responsible for daily organization of teaching and learning spaces at the Vancouver Campus for two cohorts of students, such as: setting up spaces, tear-down and organizing, and maintenance of equipment in clinical teaching spaces.
- Supporting instructors and responding to and resolving complex issues in teaching spaces that arise with little notice, assisting faculty and instructors (some of whom are unfamiliar with UBC procedures) in a prompt, helpful and courteous manner.
- Liaises with MEDIT/UBC IT to resolve videoconferencing issues in teaching spaces and meeting rooms.
- Performs preventative maintenance on teaching equipment and submits requests for maintenance on AV equipment.
- Monitors equipment inventory and ensures new or replacement items are ordered and purchased in a timely manner. Orders, tracks, and receives equipment for program delivery. Tracks and reconciles purchases to equipment and teaching supplies re costs remain within allocated budgets
- Maintains storage areas for teaching and exam equipment. Ensures storage areas are well organized and equipment is accessible and easily found by instructors.
- Receives Equipment and teaching space requirements from course coordinators, faculty and external instructors and ensures those requirements are met.
- Liaises with Classroom Operations staff at other sites to ensure substantial equivalency in learning space set up and equipment use to ensure accreditation requirements are met
- Liaises with Building Operations to maintain teaching and learning spaces. Initiating maintenance tickets when necessary.
