Equipment and Inventory Technician

- Under the direction of the Division Captain, the
- **Equipment and Inventory Technician** facilitates the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE), firefighting, and station equipment, and conducts and maintains inventories. The
- **Equipment and Inventory Technician** coordinates and perform the testing, maintenance, and repair of firefighting equipment, ladder testing, and PPE. The
- **Equipment and Inventory Technician** acts in a manner that supports and promotes the mission, vision, and values of HRFE.**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develops specifications and makes recommendations for purchase agreements for PPE, firefighting and station equipment, sources and procures items as needed following established HRM procurement policies and procedures.
- Identifies, investigates, and makes recommendations on new firefighting technology.
- Maintains systems to track the issuance, repair, and inventories of PPE, firefighting and station equipment; and maintains inventory control systems.
- Coordinates the disposal of surplus equipment.
- Coordinates the maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment such as hose testing and repair, nozzles, axes, saws, and wildland firefighting equipment.
- Assists in the coordination and implementation of the Respiratory Protection Program implementation for face piece fit-testing.
- Provides logístical support for firefighting and emergency operations such as obtaining fuel, hose, and foam, PPE, speedy dry for fuel spills, and any other logístical support, as required.
- Conducts annual inspections and performance maintenance of firefighting and personal protective equipment.
- Conducts annual fire service ground ladder testing as per NFPA 1932 Standards.
- Assist with the movement or transfer of equipment and supplies as required for receiving, storage, distribution, and installation to various locations within HRM.
- Communicates with vendors, suppliers, and other HRM employees regarding equipment and supply needs.
- Maintains thorough and accurate records of all activities. Prepares and submits, on a timely basis, daily logs and other appropriate reports based on functions being performed.
- Prepares and maintains apparatus equipment profiles for inventory control and performance maintenance.
- Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the NS Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental Policies and Guidelines.
- Reviews established policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines and recommends any changes or additions deemed necessary.
- Performs other related duties as required.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Experience**:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Five (5) years in the Fire Service (career or volunteer), or a combination of education and experience in a related field.
- Experience as a structural firefighter.
- Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement, and the ability to obtain a Class 1 License upon hire.
- Experience in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of fire service equipment and small engines preferred.
- Experience in the preparation of equipment specifications and interpretation of tender documents considered an asset.
**Technical /Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**:
- Thorough knowledge of safety and fire service standards such as NFPA, ULC, CSA, and labour laws.
- Thorough knowledge of the organizational structure of Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency.
- Thorough working knowledge of organizational policies and operating procedures.
- Thorough working knowledge of organizational safety practices.
- Knowledge of current methods, techniques, and procedures required to safely operate fire service equipment and apparatus.
- Thorough knowledge of record management practices.
**Working Conditions**
**Physical Effort**
Hours of work in accordance with IAFF Local 268 collective agreement
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- Frequent travel within HRM
- Occasional out-of-town travel may be required
- Required to meet and work with volunteer groups and attend other required job functions outside regular business hours**Physical Environment**
Job functions may be performed in a controlled facility/station or in an outdoor environment with exposure to inclement weather.
- May be exposed to noise and by-products of combustion
- Occasional lifting of heavy equipment (at least 70 lbs unassisted) is required.
- Safety shoes must be worn.**Mental Stress**
Must have the ability to remain calm under stressful situations.
