**Lead, Research & Development (R&D) Operations**:

**PRIMARY PURPOSE**
As the Lead, R&D Operations, you provide operational leadership and oversight across GIFS facilities, including laboratories, growth chambers and plant growth facilities, to safeguard, scale and enhance the efficiency of operations to accelerate outcomes and long-term success. Your leadership supports the implementation of the strategic plan with a key area of focus on expanding capacity and capabilities, operational excellence, quality management and compliance with regulatory and business requirements through growing and developing productivity and scope.

**NATURE OF WORK**
Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, you lead and manage the smooth, effective, and efficient day to day coordination and operations of the R&D facilities. You act as the co-chair of the safety committee and lead by example to implement and uphold the highest safety standards for GIFS. You lead the implementation of operational excellence initiatives aligned with the strategic plan. You understand the values, culture, challenges, and operational needs of GIFS. As a people leader for cross-platform and casual team members, you manage the full employee life cycle and work to support your team in day-to-day issues, as well as career development and engagement initiatives.

The Lead, R&D Operations interfaces with many scientific disciplines, working collaboratively with the Platform and Program Leads. The technology platforms include Plant Growth Facilities, Omics and Precision Agriculture Laboratory (OPAL), Cell Biology, Engineering Biology, and Data Management and Analytics (DMA). The programs are Accelerated Breeding, Biomanufacturing and Policy and Regulatory.

The Operations Lead has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive in a matrix organization, including the ability to motivate and work collaboratively towards goals and milestones.

Your success depends on your ability to understand the interconnectedness of GIFS and the impact changes and operations have on all the platforms, programs, external clients, and overall reputation of GIFS. You demonstrate a strong safety acumen and support change management. The ability to establish and maintain relationships as well as the ability to influence are critical to your success. As the Lead, you regularly address complexities in operations and are required to manage emerging and unpredictable events in a timely manner. You implement difficult and challenging decisions, often during periods of change requiring well developed organizational and project management skills. Significant judgement is required with errors resulting in a moderate to a high level of impact resulting in lost time, resources or impacts to external clients. The volume of work is high and may require off-hours efforts.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Oversight of the day-to-day operations and future sustainability of the GIFS R&D facilities including the greenhouse, growth chambers and scientific laboratories.
- Collaborate with members of the technology platforms and programs and facilities personnel in support of R&D operations aligned to GIFS strategic goals.
- Lead the operations team by managing the full employee lifecycle which includes, hiring, performance management and development as well as departures, as required, ensuring the core competencies of the team align with GIFS.
- Support GIFS’ procurement process and the capital planning process, which includes capital budgeting process/prioritizing resources, assisting with business case development, commissioning, and asset management.
- Manage financial information and adjust operational budgets in support of financial goals.
- Initiate and participate in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of policies, standard operating procedures, and quality management initiatives for GIFS.
- Manage relationships with external partners/vendors.
- Ensure GIFS R&D facilities run with legality and conformity to established regulations and mitigate risk and liability by ensuring compliance with safety standards and standard operating procedures.
- Co-Chair the local Safety Committee and participate in other committees both internal and external to GIFS, as required.
