This is a permanent technician position in the Department of Chemical Engineering, paid by operating funds.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching labs. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Administers accounts. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the day-today operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching laboratories. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Confers with professors concerning the scope and objectives of teaching laboratory sessions.
- Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency, including recommendations on staff requirements.
- Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Reviews existing experiments. Performs literature searches; reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Tests, evaluates and participates in devising new methodology and experiments.
- Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Designs or fabricates specialized equipment as required. Oversees set-up of equipment and demonstrations. Oversees equipment loans.
- Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks within field of expertise.
- Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
- Organizes and assigns laboratory sections. Liaises between staff and students. Resolves problems such as late assignments, timetable conflicts, and make-up laboratory sessions.
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
- Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material. Ensures timed purchase of perishables and live specimens. Arranges for permits for restricted specimens.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
- Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, electrophoresis apparatus, electrophysiological recording apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers and audio-visual equipment.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Experience overseeing teaching laboratories.
- Demonstrated experience interacting with students, academics and researchers.
- Ability to understand course curriculum of undergrad Chemical Engineering labs and ability and interest in supporting these labs, education and research.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to resolve problems and instruct students and academics. Solid knowledge and understanding of health and safety as well as CNESST requirements.
- Experience using balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, fume hoods incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, chillers, temperature probes and readouts, flowmeters, computers and pumps.
- Demonstrated ability to service and maintain certain equipment, such as the reserve osmosis systems and all pumps used for fluid mechanics experiments.
- Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
