Contract Dates: 4 months contract - August 28, 2023, to December 8, 2023
Location: Bellairs Research Institute, Barbados
We are recruiting a motivated individual to assist in the delivery of the academic content of the Barbados Field Study Semester in the Fall 2023. The incumbent will stay at the Bellairs Research Institute for the entire Fall semester, from Aug. 28th, 2023 until December 8th, 2023. In addition to lodging, two meals per day are provided on weekdays.
About the Bellairs Research Institute
The Bellairs Research Institute is Canada's only teaching and research facility in the tropics. Located in Holetown, Barbados, the Bellairs Research Institute is a McGill University facility which maintains an open-door policy to all researchers with academic interests in tropical terrestrial and marine environments.
About the Barbados Field Study Semester (BFSS)
Position Overview
The Course-Related Support-Advising position will support the students and course activities of the BFSS program. The incumbent will work closely with and assist the Program Director and Instructors in the delivery of academic content in the Barbados Field Study Semester.
Main functions- Respond to student inquiries enrolled in the BFSS during the program. Provide individual advising for students enrolled in the program.- Organize weekly check-ins with students and ensure their well-being throughout the program.- Support students with the coordination of local travel, for conducting their fieldwork during the BFSS.- Support and assist the teaching team with the planning, preparation, and implementation of academic activities in the BFSS, including local field trips.- Participate in group discussions, tutorials, and field trips and assist students with course material, research proposals, assessments, or exercises.- Assist with the grading of exams and other course assessments.- Ensure that all required equipment and material is available for students throughout the program.- Support the Academic Director and Instructors with the implementation and delivery of the academic content of the program.
Qualifying skills- Master’s Degree or Equivalent- Educational background in science (e.g. Ecology, Earth Sciences, Geography, Environment)- Strong teaching skills- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills- Valid driver’s license
