**Position Description**:
**Accountabilities**:

- Prepare and implement corporate communications and public engagement strategies and plans in support of corporate departments, divisions and initiatives
- Lead, coach and oversee performance and development of direct staff reports
- Provide guidance, support and direction to staff regarding priorities of the team and the annual work plan
- Manage the recruitment, selection, orientation and training of staff
- Oversee brand awareness, design and digital communications
- Manage media relations including developing news releases, media advisories, key messaging, speaking notes, and coordinating news conferences and media interviews for corporate leadership team, senior management team and council
- Act as an alternate Emergency Information Officer as per the Province’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, City of Waterloo By-law No. 2017-083 Emergency Response Plan
- Provide recommendations to staff on key messages for media interviews, including advice on issues of a sensitive nature, as required
- Support the implementation of Digital Services strategy within the organization
- Support and assist in the coordination of corporate photography, videography and new media initiatives
- Develop and monitor corporate communications and public engagement policies, procedures and programs
- Attend various internal and external corporate committee meetings as a lead communications support
- Other duties as assigned

**Minimum Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field combined with a minimum of 7 years of progressive communications experience; equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered
- Experience in a leadership role supervising staff is preferred, with demonstrated ability to influence, inspire, assist and develop others
- Accreditation through the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is considered an asset
- Certification from the International Association Public Participation (IAP2) is considered an asset
- Previous training in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Respectful Workplaces is an asset
- Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, professional communications techniques and best practices, including online and electronic communications, social media, mobile and multi-media, print production, graphic design and information technology systems
- Demonstrated ability to identify issues and translate into strategic communications, including crisis communications
- Demonstrated superior written communication skills, oral presentation skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading
- Strong attention to detail and problem solving skills
- Excellent organizational skills and experience in coordinating and managing multiple activities and projects under tight time constraints and resulting in successful conclusions
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Experience with iCreate CMS, FormBuilder, Google Analytics, SiteImprove, Constant Contact or SproutSocial would be considered an asset
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact effectively with the public, internal customers and other community partners
- This position may be required to work in excess of the regular 35 hours/week as needed.
