**PROFILE**

Gowling WLG is looking for a Head of Business Development to join our firm in any of our Canadian offices

In collaboration with key stakeholders and their teams, the Head of BD is responsible for developing and driving the Firm’s integrated business development strategies and plans to grow and win profitable business from existing and new relationships. This position will provide leadership and support to BD teams to align with the Firm’s strategic plan and brand to develop modern, profitable and achievable go-to-market action plans.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develop, lead, manage, implement and measure the BD planning process and plan that drives profitable retention, growth and acquisition, aligned to the Firm vision.
- Create a consistent approach to develop, lead, implement, measure, report and support the key priorities of the BD strategic plan.
- Provide BD advice and guidance to leaders of client teams, practices, sectors, and international sales initiatives.
- Manage relationships between BD and Business Services groups to ensure seamless service from the BD team and support the Proposals team on pitches and pursuits for clients and targets in the Firm’s key areas.
- Provide leadership and performance management for direct reports and encourage a people-first culture of respect, collaboration, self-improvement, innovation and continuous improvement in line with the Firm’s values and one-firm approach.
- Champion research, thought leadership and client feedback initiatives.
- Provide support to market, regional and global firm projects as required.
- Manage the Firm’s annual BD budget in collaboration with others as required.
- Any other relevant duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- A University degree with an emphasis on BD, marketing and communications.
- A minimum of 10 years experience in BD and/or related marketing and sales roles preferably in legal or professional services.
- Strong people leadership, management and development experience, including coaching and mentoring skills.
- Project management experience and/or certification an asset.
- Ability to work with and influence people in a matrixed organizational structure.
- Experience developing client and group BD strategic plans.
- Able to collaborate with marketing and other business services members.
- Client facing experience and the ability to see things from a client perspective.
- Experience operating internationally in multi-cultural and multi-lingual environments preferred.
- Broad knowledge of different sectors and practice portfolios to identify BD opportunities.
- Ability to advance initiatives successfully and achieve consensus with information that is incomplete, ambiguous or sensitive.
- Solutions-oriented approach to addressing and mitigating issues that may arise within projects or teams.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects at the same time across multiple time zones.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and succinctly with a proven record of accomplishment in obtaining buy-in and action from others.
- Bilingual (English and French) is an asset.
