Course: ITAL 309 Perspectives on Italy (3 credits)
Teaching Schedule: Monday to Thursday; 10:05 am-12:25 pm. Taught in Rome, Italy.

Course details: A study of various topics relating to the perception of Italy, the country, its people and their culture as seen by foreign and/or Italian writers. TOPIC: This course examines how Italian “national” identity has emerged and evolved in a consistently multi-ethnic and multicultural environment. From Roman times, though the Middle Ages and Renaissance, during the Risorgimento and the process of national unification, and down to the present day, the sense of who is Italian and what it means to be Italian has been a contested ground characterized by negotiations between different peoples, cultures and identities. This is not surprising given Italy’s location in the middle of the Mediterranean which has always been a crossroad of civilizations. These reflections are intended to challenge the stereotypes of Italian-ness which circulate not only abroad but within Italy itself. This course is taught in Italian.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE : This course will be taught in Rome, Italy (La Sapienza University) as part of the Summer in Italy program. All associated travel expenses (i.e. accommodation, per diem, etc.) will be covered by the program. There is a possibility that this course will be co-taught. If this is the case, course lecturers will teach 1.5 credits each, at a salary of $4,812.50.
Position Summary:
A Course assignment includes all or part of the following teaching activities:
a) preparation of the Course and Course plan;
b) delivery of the Course;
c) evaluation of students;
d) submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades;
e) supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff;
f) upon request, review of their students’ grades;
g) meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements;
Employees shall perform their duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit. An Employee shall use appropriate pedagogical methods and material.
Teaching Qualification Requirements:
Ph.D. in Italian or registered in the Italian Studies graduate program at McGill at the ABD level. Fluency in English and fluency or near native fluency in Italian required
**Experience**:
A minimum of two semesters as instructor of a course at a similar level, Ph.D. in Italian or to be registered in the Italian Studies graduate program at McGill at the ABD level.
