Reporting to the Management Supervisor, Safety and Health, the Safety and Health Consultant participates in the development, monitoring, evaluation and maintenance of safety programs, safe work practices/procedures and material handling. The incumbent conducts inspections and investigations. The incumbent provides safety and health consultation, guidance and support to management, staff and contractors.

**Duties**:

- Participate in updating, implementing and maintaining the Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) program to ensure compliance with the legislative requirements of the WSH Act and Regulations.
- Ensure that Emergency Response Plans remain current, effective and comply with legislative requirements.
- Review and update safety and health policies and safe work procedures related to the WSH program in consultation with the Senior Safety and Health Consultant, Policy Administration and WSH Committee/Representatives.
- Liaise with the Workplace Safety & Health Branch and other external agencies regarding Safety, Health and Life Safety programs.
- Attend workplace safety and health committee meetings as a professional/technical resource. Encourage and support the WSH committees as they fulfill their role/responsibilities of internal monitoring of safety and health in the workplace.
- Monitor the WSH committee membership/Representatives to ensure that all committees have sufficient membership levels based on union constitutional requirements, etc.
- Ensure WSH committee members/Representatives follow up on requests for information, action items, etc.
- Evaluate and distribute safety and health promotional materials throughout all sites.
- Identify known and potential hazards to workers, assess the associated risks and implement control measures to eliminate or control/reduce the hazards.
- Assist in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of safe work procedures, and confirm safe work practices are exercised throughout the organization.
- Coordinate ergonomic assessments throughout the organization to identify potential musculoskeletal risk factors/hazards, implement control measures to minimize those injuries and monitor for their ongoing effectiveness.
- Monitor proper use of personal protective equipment and report violations to management. Participate in regular formal and informal safety and health inspections and report deficiencies for corrective action to department management team members.
- Participate in quarterly WSH committees/Representatives inspections. Conduct additional, periodic inspections as required for continued improvement and confirming legislative compliance.
- Research and recommend appropriate controls for known and potential safety and health hazards.
- Ensure that chemical and biological hazards are controlled through proper use, handling, storage, labeling, with current safety data sheets (SDS) and worker education, as per relevant legislation.
- Report safety and health hazards related to contractor activities to ensure corrective action is implemented to protect the organization. Work in cooperation and consultation with Construction Project Management Services team members to assist in ensuring compliance and prevention of MBLL worker exposure to risk of injuries while construction takes place in our premises.
- Assist in and coordinate Emergency Preparedness, Fire Prevention and Life Safety program in consultation with internal departments such as Security/Facilities and external consultants as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

**Primary Qualifications**:

- Diploma in a safety & health related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) - and/or committed to achieve certification with two (2) years at MBLL.
- A minimum of four years’ experience participating in workplace safety and health activities, in a business, retail and/or hospitality industry setting.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and presentation skills, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Have and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License.
- Knowledge of provincial fire safety legislation and related building codes.
- Formal education and training in Safety & Health, fire safety & emergency preparedness is an asset.
- Current certification in CPR/First Aid and AED is considered an asset.

**Secondary Qualifications**
- Bilingual (French/English) language skills is an asset.
