Job Summary

To manage all facets of daily operations, maintenance, and finances of a research laboratory. Emphasis for this position is lab management and there is also an expectation to carry some wet-lab work as part of an active research project. The individual will be joining a dedicated and highly motivated team of stem cell biologists, bioengineers, synthetic biologists, and computational modelling. The work and environment are interdisciplinary, with the research focused on studying and controlling stem cell systems with both basic science and translational goals.

Organizational Status

The Lab Manager will assist the Principal Investigator in all parts of their research program. The individual will interact closely with members of the research group including graduate and undergraduate students; UBC and department staff and administrators; funding agency administrators on matters of progress and finance reports; and scientific sales managers. The lab management position is fundamental to the ongoing success of the lab.

Work Performed

Technical duties- Design, modify and perform complex independent experiments on human and or mouse pluripotent stem cells- Develop and conduct experiments using standard cell and molecular biology techniques such as flow cytometry and microscopy- Conduct complex analyses, interpretation, and data compilation for reporting results for granting agencies, conferences, and participating in the preparation of scientific manuscripts- Contributes novel techniques and areas of scientific expertise to the lab- Provides instruction and training, internally and externally, in developing new techniques and conducting collaborative experiments.

Managerial duties- Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances of the lab, including the management of lab personnel salaries and research budgets- Identify and implement strategies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of research laboratories.- Develops standard operating procedures and makes recommendations on workflow improvements.- Oversees the progress of projects and participates in research projects throughout the life cycle, including networking and attending scientific conferences.-
- Leads the management of biosafety and ethics compliance in the lab- Schedules and trains students/staff and makes recommendations concerning hiring and provides input into staff performance.- Facilitate appointment and reappointments for staff and students with department HR representative and provides feedback on staff performance for hiring and retaining decisions

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Exercises a considerable amount of judgement, responsibility, and initiative related to the functioning of the lab. Incompetence or incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel. Poor judgment would result in loss of experimental data and delay in conducting research.

Work will be discussed with the Principal Investigator in weekly meetings or as needed. The successful applicant will be responsible for errors in their work, for reporting problems and mistakes in a timely way, and for correcting those errors.

Supervision Received

Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given

The applicant will have joint responsibility for supervising graduate students and employees at lower classifications. They will contribute to staff selection and performance evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
