Job Summary

The primary focus of the Research Technician is to support the research activities of the Analytical Core for Metabolomics and Nutrition (ACMaN) at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR). The Research Technician will preform highly skilled technical tasks requiring extensive education, training and experience in the area of Metabolomics and Nutrition. The Research Technician must have the ability, knowledge, and experience to support technical and analytical work using ACMaN's gas chromatographs, liquid chromatographs, mass spectrometers, spectrophotometers, immunoanalyzers and sample preparation equipment. ACMaN is a busy laboratory and analyzes approximately 4,000 samples per year and develops new analytical methods for investigators with novel research projects.

The Role holder is expected to keep abreast of techniques and developments in their area of expertise. Exceptional organizational skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative are required for this position.

Organizational Status

The BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) is located at the BC Children's Hospital. The research community based at the BCCHR is comprised mostly of UBC faculty, staff, and students. The BCCHR conducts discovery, translational and clinical research to benefit the health of children and their families. The BCCHR is supported by BC Children's Hospital Foundation and works in close partnership with BC Children's Hospital (BCCH), the Provincial Health Services Authority and its agencies, and the University of British Columbia.

Reports to the Core Research Services Facilities Manager and has a dotted reporting line to the Co-Scientific Directors of the ACMaN facility.

Work Performed

  • Designs, modifies and performs complex experiments and systems and/or uses technically advanced procedures and conducts complex analysis and interpretation.
  • Develops and writes novel protocols and safety procedures.
  • Troubleshoots complex equipment and systems problems.
  • Operates and maintains highly specialized equipment requiring extensive training.
  • Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances of a laboratory or technical operation for a department, including responsibility for budget, large purchase recommendations, inventory, forecasting and maintenance of financial reports, administration of staff.
  • Develops operating procedures and makes recommendation on workflow improvements.
  • Oversees the progress of projects and participates in complex research activities.
  • Provides instruction and training in the use of specialized techniques and equipment.
  • Researches and determines the applicability of new technology and systems related to work.
  • Writes reports and assists in writing ethics and grant applications.
  • Supervises, schedules and trains staff and may make recommendations with respect to hiring and providing input into staff performance.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
  • Preparing samples for analysis by gas chromatography (GC), GC tandem mass spectrometry (GCMSMS), Liquid Chromatographs (HPLC), HPLC-MSMS and immunoanalyzers for various analytes including fatty acids, amino acids, small molecules, vitamins, lipids and other compounds.
  • Developing methods for analysis of analytes required by investigators at BCCHR.
  • Documentation and validation of methods, writing of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Quality control (QC) of all analytical methods to ensure consistency of data and documentation of the QCs.
  • Troubleshooting equipment and methodology problems and correcting those problems.
  • Coordinating with investigators, post-doctoral fellows and students to ensure sample analysis is performed appropriately. Assisting in choosing analysis of appropriate compounds of interest.
  • Basic maintenance of GC, GCMS, HPLC and HPLC-MSMS, including column changes, cleaning ion sources and injectors/detectors.
  • Targeted metabolomics analysis by HPLC-MSMS using commercially available kits.
  • Maintaining sample inventories in -80C and -20C freezers.
  • Maintaining and updating chemical inventories and appropriate chemical storage.
  • Invoicing for costs of sample analysis through UBC WorkDay software.
  • Budgeting, coordinating with finance department to ensure adequate financial reporting.
  • Determining appropriate analysis costs for each method.
  • Maintaining and documenting equipment use metrics through online software.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Technician is required to conduct research activities in an ethical manner. Study data must be reliably and accurately recorded. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head, and the Research Assistant s professional organization. Overview and management to ensure complex and expensive equipment is maintained.

Supervision Received

Works under minimum supervision. Receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications. Provides training and support to trainees and other staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
