With the goal of adding 50 hotels and numerous restaurants to its current portfolio of hospitality assets over the next decade, Northland will be ambitiously pursuing new build opportunities. The Director of New Construction will be a key contributor in achieving these plans for growth.
As Director of New Construction, you'll be an integral part of our Design & Construction Leadership Team. Reporting to the VP of Construction & Design, you will be responsible for the ongoing construction of the Northland Properties Development Pipeline for New Build Hotels and Restaurants, leading a team of Project Managers, Sr. Site Leadership, Site Superintendents and other key site management personnel, and acting as liaison with our operations teams and all Support Centre functional teams. Your duties will include the following:
- Partner with the Construction & Design Leadership Team to create a high-performance environment focused on mentoring and growth.
- Create and maintain an environment of trust, support, and open information sharing consistent with Northland Properties Purpose and Values.
- Partner with the VP of Construction and Design to plan and implement a short-, mid
- and long-term Construction Strategy for the execution of new Construction Group projects.
- Develop and implement plans to deliver approved development projects and improve Construction Group effectiveness.
- Foster a winning team culture of accountability among Support Center staff, Operations, and Site Teams.
- Accountable for Construction Sites Safety Performance
- Manage project management calendar to achieve goals.
- Provide leadership support for driving new initiatives into the business.
- Establish and maintain a process for assessing project performance and communicating opportunities and challenges.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry regulations and standards.
- Manage documentation and approvals aligned with project schedules.
- Create QA/QC process for Construction to ensure compliance with approved drawings and local requirements.
- Act as Subject Matter Expert for Construction aspects from project inception to completion.
- Implement, Maintain and Manage Continuous Improvement Program for Construction
- Interview, hire and oversee training and development of staff of Project Managers, Senior Site Leadership, Superintendents and other key site personnel.
- Regularly visit construction sites to evaluate performance and quality.
- Establish and maintain a process to assess project performance and communicate opportunities and challenges with the appropriate stakeholders.
- Support the growth and development of company culture and professionally represent Northland Properties
What are we looking for?
- 15+ years of relevant experience in the construction industry, including management of multiple projects of $25 MM or more, from start to finish.
- Proven experience in leadership roles, with the ability to build and lead high-performance cross-functional teams and foster a culture of collaboration, mentorship, and growth within the organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management or equivalent experience in the field.
- Familiarity with construction management systems like Procore or CEM and good working knowledge of MS Office
- Exceptional communication, problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-evolving environment with multiple priorities.
- Expertise in ground-up hotels and high-rise hotel/condo projects would be viewed favourably.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong emotional intelligence, high energy with good initiative and a strong work ethic.
- Willingness to travel across Canada and into the United States for site visits.
- Residing in or willing to relocate to Vancouver, BC
