Immigrant Youth Worker with Spanish Fluency

(School and Student Support B)

**Position Type**: Permanent

**Hours**: 35 hours/week

**Schedule**: 10:45am to 6:45pm (Mon-Fri)

**Working Months**: Sept to June each year

**Salary**: $33.26 per hour

Please note that regular work hours are from 10:45 am to 6:45 pm; however, some student group activities may necessitate the use of irregular hours and/or work on the occasional weekend.

This position is a collaborative program (Newkids Police Academy) in partnership with Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and VSB and runs two cohorts of 10-week youth sessions at the VPD headquarters. The Immigrant Youth Worker will be providing enhanced settlement support to newcomer immigrant youth, with a special focus on older students, aged 15 to 19, in schools. The Immigrant Youth Worker’s role involves working with immigrant students who may have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in addition to weak academic backgrounds, poor school attendance and disengagement with school and community resources.

**In this role, you will**:
Work with the Youth Settlement Workers to identify and recruits program participants

Develop and facilitate program orientation prior to the start of the 10-week VPD sessions

Follow-up and remind youth of the weekly session

Support youth at the VPD sessions making sure youth feel safe, engage with the activities and gain positive experience

Collaborate with Youth Settlement Workers to develop and implement exit plan that may include referrals, meetings with parents and accompanying students to Continuing Education, community agencies, work placement, workforce recruitment centres or specific skills upgrading programs

Liaise with the VPD staff and police officers in matters related to Newkids Program

**Provide resources related to the youth’s needs, (e.g.**: volunteering, employment and skills development training)

Provide leadership opportunities for Newkids Alumni

Plan, organize and implement engagement for Newkids alumni both in groups and individual setting

Report to and work closely with the Program Coordinator, Youth Settlement Workers, Settlement Workers in School (SWIS) and District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) team to identify needs and responds to feedback from participants, school staff, VPD staff, parents and community partners

Take weekly attendance, maintain program data and assist with reporting to funders

Submit monthly reports identifying the successes and challenges of the program both electronically and in paper format

Work with the EIYP team to facilitate a weekly orientation for newcomer youth, conducts youth needs assessment, provides follow-up/outreach, plan and supervise field trips and special events

Perform other work within the job band as assigned

**Qualifications**:
Completion of grade 12 plus 4 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a degree in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education

Minimum of 3 years of related experience

Experience in an educational setting is essential

Sound/demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and the ability to assess the needs of immigrant secondary school aged students with behavioural and/or emotional issues

Sound knowledge of immigrant/refugee issues as well as cultural awareness and integration issues to facilitate cultural bridging of new Canadian students

Sound knowledge of community resources available to new Canadians as well as a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and cultures, school staff, students, families and community agencies

Ability to intervene effectively in crisis situations relating to students and to provide lay counselling to immigrant teens an asset

Must have a valid B.C. driver's license, access to a vehicle and be willing to travel to various schools throughout the district

Fluency in Spanish (verbal & written) required
