Peer Shower Attendant

**Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families (Purpose Society) has the following position available**:
**Position**: Peer Shower Attendant.
**Wage**: $26.00 an hour.
**Location**: 502 Front Street, New Westminster.
**Hours**: 8 Hours Shift; both Full
- time and Part-Time positions are available.
**Shifts**:
- 7 am - 3 pm.
- 3 pm - 11 pm.
- 11 pm - 7 am.
**Overview**:
Shower Attendants will be responsible for the control and care of an outside unit of three public showers and one toilet that will be available to any person who wishes to use the facility
There will be three eight hour shifts, 24 hours a day for seven days a week. There will be two Shower Attendants in attendance at all times.
**Reporting**:
Shower Attendants will report to the Coordinator of the Shelter or the Assistant Coordinator if the Coordinator is absent
**Core Duties**:
- The Shower Attendants will check the showers and toilets after each client has used them. They will also check to ensure that there is no paraphernalia left inside the washrooms.
- The Shower Attendants will ensure that only one person at a time enters each shower and toilet.
- The Shower Attendants will collect dirty towels after the client has finished showering. Clients will be instructed to leave the towels in a bucket that will be located at the exit of the portable.
- The Shower Attendants will ensure that the towels are washed and dried during their shift.
- The Shower Attendants will control the distribution of supplies to clients, including toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and laundry soap that will be stored inside the security booth.
- The Shower Attendants will direct folks on where they can obtain harm reduction supplies but will not distribute harm reduction supplies themselves. The staff will make sure the needle dispensers are emptied during their shift. Needle dispensers will be installed around the parking lot and they are to be kept secure and empty. The staff will have access to tools such as tongs and safety buckets to dispose of needles.
- The Shower Attendants will be trained to administer naloxone and willing to administer it when necessary. The Shower Attendants will be responsible for identifying when a person is affected by toxic drugs, calling 911, giving breaths and administering naloxone. (One-way valve barrier masks will be provided).
**Skills and Abilities**:
- Have experience working with people who have been marginalized, stigmatized and victimized
- The ability to remain calm, patient and focused in chaotic situations
- Trained in non-violent crisis intervention techniques or willing to be trained and use the techniques
- Have knowledge of drugs, drug use, mental illness and the effects of toxic drugs.
- Ability to be on time consistently
- Good communication skills, both written and oral
- Ability to gather data and keep records
- Work as part of a team in order to reduce stress and feel supported
- Ability to take charge in a first aid or other emergency and direct others on the scene
