The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) has a vision where those affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness receive effective treatment and support, and family members are an essential partner within the mental health system. Our mission is to support families affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness in British Columbia through education, advocacy and research. BCSS was founded in 1982, and is a non-profit organization with its provincial office located in Vancouver, BC.

**Communications and Marketing Manager Position**
Position reports to: Director, Operations and Programs
**Key Duties**:
**Communications**:
- Work with BCSS staff to develop key messages around programs, advocacy, and education.
- Update and maintain the BCSS Communications Plan to promote key messages and increase awareness of BCSS, BCSS Youth and the BCSS Foundation.
- Develop content for the websites, newsletter, and specific campaigns
- Support the Development Team in fundraising campaigns
- Supporting the Events Coordinator with communications and promoting all BCSS and BCSS Youth.
- Support Senior Leadership and Policy Committee on proposals and reports
- Identify and develop new educational and promotional materials
- Coordinate with appropriate staff, volunteers, Medical Advisory Committee, Policy Committee, etc., to ensure accuracy and relevancy.
- Lead on BCSS podcast, working with external podcast company
- Manage and propose a budget for Communications & Marketing campaigns and efforts.
- Provides mentorship and direction to the BCSS Communications Team
- Represents BCSS at select BC Partners meetings and projects (i.e., Visions Journal and HeretoHelp)
- Collaborate with BC Partners on initiatives supporting mental health and substance use literacy across BC
- Identify and secure external vendors and contractors as needed
- Other applicable tasks connected to BCSS messaging and events
- Translate research on mental illness and related topics into plain language for youth and their families.
- Source and create graphics for multiple audiences
- Develop and update website directory listings, as needed
**Marketing**:
Working with the Marketing Coordinator and Communications Coordinator, the Communications and Marketing Manager will:
- Update and create marketing collateral to increase awareness about key issues relating to schizophrenia, severe mental illness, and the importance of family involvement
- Update and create marketing materials for the BCSS team, including BCSS Youth
- Review all communications collateral for BCSS/BCSS Youth programs
- Review content for BCSS and BCSS Youth content to ensure readability and consistency.
- Build a digital media plan and strategy with the communications team
- Coordinate and develop of organization-wide promotional items
**Media**:
Working with the Marketing Coordinator and Communications Coordinator, the Communications and Marketing Manager will:
- Respond to media requests and inquiries
- Write and distribute media materials
- Pitch story ideas to media
- Track media coverage
- Maintain an updated media contact list
- Develop relationships between BCSS and key local and national health reporters and journalists
- Secure media around World Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day
- Other applicable tasks related to the communications and marketing portfolio
**Administration & Leadership**:
Key Competencies:
- 5-7 years’ direct experience in communications and marketing
- 3-5 years’ experience in a managerial or leadership role
- Experience in the non-profit sector is an asset
- Post-secondary education in business administration, communications, marketing, media relations, or related discipline
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional writing and editing skills
- Good understanding of severe and persistent mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia is a strong asset
- Experience working with contractors and vendors
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with staff, volunteers, families, and diverse populations
- Strong time management and multitasking abilities and willingness to manage multiple priorities
- Superior project management and organizational skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner
- Ability to use tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters
**Requirements**:
- Must be able to work typical business hours - working some evenings and weekends may be required
- This person will be expected to attend in-person for events and meetings on an infrequent basis
