The School Population and Public Health (SPPH) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) for a 1-year term, with the option for renewal for one additional year. The position will be located at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and will primarily focus on the Impact of COVID-19 on Hepatitis C (HCV) care, funded primarily by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Other areas of work include hepatitis C and B epidemiology, co-infections and assessment of the impact of interventions such as treatment on outcomes. Projects undertaken will use data from (i) the BC Hepatitis Testers Cohort, a longitudinal study of ~1.7 million people tested for HCV or HIV or reported as a confirmed case of HCV, HBV, HIV/AIDS or active TB linked with medical visits, hospitalizations, prescription drugs, cancers and deaths since 1992, (ii) the BC COVID-19 Cohort, a surveillance platform which integrates COVID-19 laboratory tests, COVID-19 case data, COVID-19 vaccination data, medical visits, hospitalizations, prescription drug dispensations, ICU admission, vital statistics and other census data, and (iii) surveys conducted among healthcare providers and among people with lived or living experience of HCV.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with the Principal Investigator, the Research Scientist, the Community Engagement and Knowledge Translation Lead as well as the study team, including other epidemiologists and statisticians at the BCCDC to develop and conduct analyses, write manuscripts and grant proposals.

The primary activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:
- strategic planning for the project direction of the impact of COVID-19 and public health control measures on Hepatitis C related services and care cascade- developing analysis plans- writing grants- communicating with collaborators regarding project matters, including updates on findings- collaborating with other members of the BCCDC Hepatitis team and COVID Impact of Hepatitis research team, public health stakeholders, and other academic partners

Skills and expertise:- An established track record of original, first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals is required.- The ability to work independently, as well as part of large multidisciplinary teams with collaborators, is desirable.- Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: hepatitis C, health systems and services research, engaging with stakeholders, geospatial modelling, and multilevel modelling- Recent related experience, including experience in the design, analysis and interpretation of health services-related data- Exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills with a proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences- Excellent research project management and interpersonal skills.

Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of the research project, and therefore affect the credibility of the Principal Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.

The position is in the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) and will be based at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). BCCDC is the provincial public health service providing disease surveillance, detection, prevention, treatment, policy development and health promotion programming to promote and protect the health of British Columbians. We have a strong interdisciplinary group of epidemiologists, statisticians, infectious disease and public health physicians, mathematical modellers, and policymakers working in a data-rich environment with many learning and development opportunities. This position is a great learning opportunity for Hepatitis C surveillance, policy development and translation of research to inform policy and program. Besides involvement in research, the position also offers opportunities for teaching at SPPH.
