The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the North East Regional Commander are seeking a qualified individual to join our team at the Elliot Lake detachment. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will manage court case files for a Detachment, providing liaison services with the court and monitoring the progress of files through the court system. You will also provide court security services for the detachment and court and to participate in the escort of offenders.
**About Us**:
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario. We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.
The East Algoma Detachment is primarily situated along the North Channel of Lake Huron in the District of Algoma, and host to a permanent population of approximately 24,000. The detachment's administrative centre is located in Blind River, with satellite detachments in Elliot Lake and Thessalon. Our service delivery area is comprised of 14 distinct municipalities and townships, as well as three Indigenous communities. The area is well balanced with a mix of both rural and urban communities.
The area is host to a very diverse and multicultural population with links to Indigenous peoples, Francophones and Anglophones. The welcoming nature of local residents has made East Algoma a prime location for retirees, young families and recently an influx of Old Order Mennonite and Amish residents into the East Algoma area.
The City of Elliot Lake is the largest urban centre in the area and home to a significant retirement community, a champion golf course and downhill skiing
North East Region spans from Moosonee Detachment in the north, Mattawa Detachment in the east, White River Detachment in the west to the West Parry Sound and Almaguin Highlands Detachments in the south, the North East Region of the OPP encompasses a geographical area (423,173 sq. kilometers). This is larger than several European countries. The North East Region includes the districts of Algoma, Sudbury, Cochrane, Timiskaming, Nipissing, Manitoulin and Parry Sound. OPP North East Region provides policing to over 190,000 permanent residents and to more than 400,000 people when including temporary/seasonal residents. The north with its pristine waterways, trails and picturesque landscapes, offers sporting and recreational enthusiasts endless opportunities, resulting in the influx of seasonal residents, visitors and tourists. The North East Region is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on our highways, trails and waterways. The North East Region contains major highways that are part of the cross Canada roadway system; Hwy 11, Hwy 17, Hwy 66 and Hwy 69. In contrast to the Trans Canada routes, the region also polices two ice roads that stretch to the James Bay coast. The vastness of the region comprises thousands of lakes, rivers and trails both within organized municipalities and unorganized remote areas.
There are four Municipal Police Services and four stand-alone Indigenous Police Services in the North East Region that we work in partnership with to keep the Region safe and secure. Our relationship with First Nations communities is a continuing organizational priority. The total Indigenous population within the eight Census Divisions, which constitutes “North East Ontario” (Algoma, Sudbury, Greater Sudbury, Cochrane, Timiskaming, Nipissing, Manitoulin and Parry Sound) represents almost 60,000 people. There is also a significant and vibrant francophone population living within the North East Region which adds to the culture and character of our communities. There are approximately 112,000 people represented. A significant portion of the economy in the north continues to be both resource based with residents being employed in forestry, mining and agriculture. Small and medium sized businesses also drive the local northern economy (businesses with fewer than 100 employees account for 99% of northern firms).
The OPP Values promote always doing the right things for the right reasons, by:
- Serving with PRIDE, PROFESSIONALISM and HONOUR.
- Interacting with RESPECT, COMPASSION and FAIRNESS.
- Leading with INTEGRITY, HONESTY and COURAGE.
**OPS Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism**: We are committed to build a workforce that reflects the communities we serve and to promote a diverse, anti-racist, inclusive, accessible, merit-based, respectful and equitable workplace.
