LUSO Community Services is a provider of community social services with a holistic approach to community development. We provide programs and services in the London community for children, youth, families and seniors of culturally diverse and ethnic backgrounds.

***: The Newcomer Settlement Counsellor will provide support to individuals who are new to Canada. The Settlement Counsellor will provide information and referrals to newcomers to help them with immediate needs such as housing, health care, education, employment, the legal system, immigration issues etc.,

**Reporting**:The Settlement Worker will be an employee of LUSO Community Services. Day-to-day supervision/consultation will be provided by LUSO’s Director of Settlement Services.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Individual Service to Newcomer clients**:

- meets with clients to assess their settlement strengths and needs
- disseminate information to recently arrived immigrants and refugees
- provide general assistance, orientation and information about community and government programming to newcomers
- identify and refer to other community services, agencies programs etc.
- facilitate client access to services by telephoning for appointments, translating documents, assisting clients fill out forms, write correspondence, etc.,
- advocate on behalf of clients with institutions, employers, landlords etc.,
- assist newcomer to understand their rights and responsibilities as new Canadians
- identify and bring forwards for discussion/resolution, any challenge barrier or gaps in service for clientele

**Group Service to Newcomer clients**:

- provide workshops and information sessions on pertinent issues
- work with a team of professionals to ensure that the client needs are met

**Administration Duties**:

- maintain accurate and up to date files on clients
- prepares and submits reports, statistics etc.,
- fulfill administrative duties associated with the project such as maintaining statistics, report writing, committee meetings etc.
- participate in staff meetings and attend training opportunities
- participate in community meetings and workshops to stay current on issues affecting community

**JOB EXPECTATIONS**:

- Provide client-centered services in a supportive and culturally-sensitive manner.
- Operate in accordance with policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols of LUSO Community Services.
- Participate as a member of LUSO Community Services’ staff team by furthering collective team goals.
- Represent the principles and values of LUSO Community Services.
- Work independently and effectively in a team and with other professionals in the community.
- Promote and demonstrate sensitivity to cross-cultural issues.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Post Secondary Education in Social Services or equivalent International Degree
- Extensive experience in actively supporting newcomers and referring newcomers and immigrants to needed services
- Minimum of 3 years relevant experience (i.e. in community outreach, organizing events, activities, groups, workshop and delivery, case management etc.)
- Proven ability to work with individuals and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge of newcomer settlement and integration processes and a working knowledge of community supports available
- Knowledge of current legislation and policies affecting newcomers and immigrants
- Proven ability to work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Project a positive, friendly and professional attitude
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Exceptional customer service skills, over the phone and in person
- Self-motivated individual with ability to work under pressure
- Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.
- **Ability to communicate in a second language an asset in particular: Arabic, Kurdish, Spanish**:

- Organizational, time management, and leadership skills.
- Assessment and problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility and ability to work some evenings and/or weekends if required
- Excellent computer skills in MS Office including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access
- Access to a vehicle an asset
- **Must obtain a Vulnerable Person’s Police Screening
- before commencing employment**:

- **Possess First Aid and CPR before commencing employment**

**Starting Salary**:$48,165/year.

Employees will also have health and dental benefits, Paid sick time, and paid holiday closure at Christmas in addition to statutory holidays throughout the year and personal vacation time.
