Guelph Museums consists of three heritage sies - Guelph Civic Museum, McCrae House, and Locomotive 6167 - through which we explore our local histories in the form of exhibitions, online access, educational programming, and community events.

The place we call Guelph has served as traditional lands and a place of refuge for many peoples over time, including the Attiwonderonk and the Haudenosaunee. This land is held as the treaty lands and territory with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Guelph lies directly adjacent to the Haldimand Tract and is part of a long-established traditional hunting ground for the Six Nations of the Grand River. Many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, from across Turtle Island, call Guelph home today.

These guiding principles inform all that we do at Guelph Museums and, as such, extend to the incumbent in the Education Assistant position described below.

Position Overview:
Resumes are being accepted for the position of Education Assistant at Guelph Museums, within the Culture and Recreation Department of Public Services. Reporting to the Supervisor, Visitor Experiences, the Education Assistant will support in-person visitors experiences at Guelph Museums’ heritage sites and conduct research in support of the Civic and McCrae Collections. The Education Assistant position is partially funded through Canadian Heritage: Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations program.

**Key duties and responsibilities**:

- Support in-person visitor experiences at all three heritage sites of Guelph Museums and contribute to a substantive curatorial project in the Civic Collection.
- Assist with development, coordinator, and implementation of special events and activities that highlight and promote our local histories to the citizens of Guelph and to the wider community.
- Be knowledgeable of local history to facilitate programs and interact with visitors at Guelph Civic Museum, McCrae House, and Locomotive 6167
- Under curatorial scholarship, the incumbent will focus on the Military Medals Project, comprising about 150 medals in the Civic and McCrae Collections. Priorities of the project include:

- Organization of existing research and understanding of language standards for description of the medals
- Conducting biographical research
- Updating associated catalogue records to current museological standards and to incorporate recent/new research.
- Examine each catalogue record for completeness, identifying opportunities for additional research and scholarship.
- Make historic information available through PastPerfect Online (collections management system).
- Other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications and requirements**:

- Enrollment in one of the following post-secondary programs of study: History, Education, Anthropology, Art History, Studio Art, or other Humanities/Social Sciences (3rd or 4th year undergraduate-level), or Applied Museum Studies (1st or 2nd year college-level).
- Strong organizational skills, good computer skills, and some experience in research.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Must be registered with Young Canada Works:

- Must meet eligibility requirements as determined by Young Canada Works:

- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
- are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.

**Hours of work**:
35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. This is a fixed term contract, from May 13, 2024, until August 30, 2024.

**Pay/Salary**:
18.34 - $21.58 per hour
