Class B Refrigeration Operator

**Position Summary**:
Reporting to the Facility Supervisor, the Class B Refrigeration Operator is responsible for operating the ammonia refrigeration system as outlined in the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000 (TSSA) regulations at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Center (NFFRC). This position is also responsible for performing the overall maintenance and janitorial duties and assisting with the efficient operation of all the physical plant equipment associated with the arenas and swimming pool.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Operate the ammonia refrigeration system as outlined in the TSSA regulations, inclusive of the preliminary and actual start-up of the system, daily checks after start-up, periodic maintenance, and shutdown.
- Conduct facility inspections regularly and provide routine maintenance support for other non-refrigerated building mechanical devices.
- Diagnose machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions.
- Review work orders and discuss work with the supervisor.
- Perform scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance services.
- Fill out operating logs and communicate with supervisors, managers and equipment operators on work performed.
- Assist with the making and quality of ice in the arenas, including, but not limited to, floor preparation, painting of ice and lines, shaving of ice, ice thickness, cleaning of the ice, etc.
- Assist with the operation/maintenance of the ice resurfacer, cutting blades, etc. This task necessitates implementing a daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual preventative maintenance schedule.
- Respond to emergencies and support the operations of the building’s fire suppression system.
- Repair and maintain air compressors, air dryers, condensers, softeners, and hydraulic system, as required.
- Perform plumbing tasks such as repairing leaks and installing new lines.
- Assist with the general maintenance of the engine and filtration room - ensuring exhaust ventilation equipment is adequate, good housekeeping practices, emergency lighting, proper exits, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc. are sufficient and available in the appropriate locations.
- Assist with the general housekeeping duties associated with all components of the arena facility including, but not limited to, dressing rooms, rink seating, hallways, etc.
- Assist with the maintenance and operation of the swimming pool filter system, inclusive of chlorination system, pool water, chemical control (PH control, chemical dosage rates, etc.); cleaning procedures (diatomaceous earth filter elements - degreasing/scale removal), understanding of centrifugal pumps/flow sensors, driathon and humidifier systems, etc.
- Assist with maintaining and operating the HVAC system, condenser systems, domestic water system, temperature settings, sump pumps, etc.
- Assist with general housekeeping duties associated with all components of the NFFRC and grounds.
- Be knowledgeable of the location of all service shutoffs and emergency valves and switches, including fire alarms.
- Assist with the operation and routine repairs of light switches, bulbs, receptacles, sinks, toilets, valves, seats, scoreboards, etc.
- Assist the Facility Supervisor with the day-to-day operation of the various assigned events.
- Comply with applicable provincial and municipal legislation, including the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Municipality’s Records and Information Management Program.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, applicable regulations, as well as the Municipality’s Health and Safety Program.
- Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills**:
- Must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent certificate (GED).
- Must hold a minimum Class “B” recognized “Refrigeration Certificate;” or be a Certified 3rd Class Stationary Engineer or a Certified 4th Class Stationary Engineer.
- Must hold or be willing to obtain the “Certified Ice Technician” and/or “Certified Pool Operator” designations.
- Must hold and maintain a current Class “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence.
- Must hold or successfully complete training toward Standard First Aid and CPR/AED Certificate.
- Must have experience demonstrating effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Previous experience in a multi-functional recreation facility would be an asset.
