Academic and Career Services at The University of Winnipeg endeavors to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where students can ask questions, seek assistance and obtain the information they need to be successful in their studies.

Student Success Advisors reach out to students who are at risk academically. They will develop and implement student success programming and initiatives for students who are at risk of dropping out of university.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assists students in being successful and persisting in their studies at the University of Winnipeg.
- Fosters relationships with students whose grades are in a particular range, and collaborates with them to identify their academic strengths and possible enhancements.
- Works with students using a positive, proactive approach to help address problems in a timely manner.
- Provides tips, and assistance with communicating with professors, time management, exam preparation, note taking and other study skills.
- Refers students for extra supports and assistance.
- Follows up with students throughout their university career.
- In collaboration with First Year Academic Advisor, facilitates First Year Information Sessions.
- Plans, coordinates and manages aspects of first year Orientation.
- Develops a start of term orientation/transition workshop series, with the goal of supporting students in becoming engaged on campus and connected to groups and activities of interest to them.
- Initiates and implements a Second Year Orientation series and a Graduation Orientation to enhance the continuum of information and supports offered to students throughout their university career.
- Provides academic and career advising on both an individual basis and in groups to undergraduate students at the University of Winnipeg using a developmental advising model.
- Supports academic needs of regular, probationary, conditional, mature and not allowed to continue status students.
- Advises students with a broad range of needs from a variety of backgrounds; demonstrates sensitivity to cultural differences and individual circumstances.
- Provides interpretation and clarification related to university policies, procedures, regulations and terminology.
- Provides current students with accurate and appropriate information related to course, major, degree and graduation requirements.
- Guides students in navigating the registration process and provides direction in the utilization of WebAdvisor and Student Planning tools.
- Counsels and advises students on decisions related to selection, scheduling and adding/dropping of courses, and selection or changes of majors and minors.
- Assesses and evaluates needs of registering students, takes discretionary action and solves problems as they occur in registration.
- Authorizes late registrations, course overloads, medical or other types of withdrawals as well as academic plans of probationary students, based on knowledge of Senate guidelines and student needs.
- Monitors students’ academic progress and assists students with strategies for academic success.
- Evaluates barriers to learning and applies knowledge of campus resources to suggest services such as study skills workshops, writing classes, or tutoring which may be beneficial for students.
- Provides advice, assessment and mentoring to students in the areas of career exploration, planning and development.
- Provides guidance on career options related to various areas of study.
- Assesses student concerns and supports students in resolving issues, problems or conflicts either through formal channels or informally. Advocates on behalf of students as necessary.
- Refers students to community services, upgrading options, and other resources to help students reach their goals.
- Provides first level counselling and support to students and refers to UWinnipeg Counselling Services, Accessibility Services or other specialized services when appropriate.
- Prepares and facilitates Academic and Career Services related presentations for students and provides Academic and Career Advising in a group setting as required.
- Functions in close collaboration with Academic and Career Services team members, as well as other Student Services departments.
- May be called upon to represent the University at Open House and other related events on campus or in the community.
- Advises on the formal appeals processes available to students if they have issues or questions about Senate regulations or University policy, or if they are experiencing challenges in their course work due to personal or health issues.
- Counsels students on the preparation of documentation and collection of evidence related to all types of appeals. Provides feedback on submitted appeals and requests further information/documentation as needed.
- Researches, prepares and presents individual student appeals for the Senate Sub-committee on appeals. Participates in the
