Position Overview:
- Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Health & Safety, the Disability Management Specialist is an astute communicator and facilitator who provides proactive and positive leadership to the organization in the areas of disability management processes, and safe return to work and accommodation processes.

**Responsibilities**:
- Provides strategic and operational service to stakeholders to effectively manage non-occupational short
- and long-term disability claims from the onset of disability, ensuring appropriate supporting documentation is maintained through the full cycle of the claim relating to adjudication decisions, medical information, physical and cognitive abilities, position requirements and early and safe return to work.
- Performs comprehensive review/assessment of medical documentation; liaises with medical professionals/insurer and organizes and facilitates multidisciplinary meetings to establish return to work plans, accommodation plans and disability management strategies for complex cases/claims including management, union and Human Resources staff. Ensures bona fide occupation requirements are met.
- Maintains regular communication with appropriate program stakeholders including employees, unions, HR staff, managers/supervisors and insurance provider to monitor ongoing claim status and provides appropriate and timely updates on return to work.
- Acts as a resource and key contact for leaders and employees regarding disability benefits, status of claim, modified duties and return to work with a focus on effective case management processes and expectations.
- Provides expert advice to Human Resources staff on health/disability best practices and emerging issues/trends.
- Collaborates with health and safety staff to ensure that resources, supports and processes for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses are sufficiently aligned.
- Develops and implements policies, processes and standard operating procedures with the goal of best practice disability management, attendance support and employee wellness programs.
- Represents the City as required to respond to legal proceedings relating to case management, including case preparation, and liaising with legal counsel.
- Provide statistical information (identifies relevant analytics for tracking) to the HR Analyst (People Analytics) to support a robust dataset in HR analytics; identifies trends and supporting opportunities for process efficiency and improvement as it relates to data-driven decision making in implementing or enhancing wellness and/or mental health programs.
- Works with Supervisor, Benefits and Employee Services to monitor utilization of benefits plans, service delivery provided by insurance providers; identify and pursue areas of cost containment and minimize premium increases and costs to the City.
- Attendance Management
- Provides advice and expertise to leaders and HR Business Partners on Attendance Support Program, ensuring continued/chronic absenteeism is addressed and improvements are noted; identifies opportunities for pro-active interventions related to absences from work.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs and training materials related to attendance, wellness, return to work and duty to accommodate.
- Determines relevant and appropriate data collection to monitor, track and evaluate trends in short term and long-term disability, and absenteeism. Works with HR Analyst to monitor and forecast trends in these areas.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Requirements**:
- 3-year degree/diploma in related field
- A minimum of 4 years related experience as an occupational health professional including experience in disability case management, accommodation, attendance management programs, and facilitating return to work.
- Certificate in disability management or equivalent is an asset.
- A Designation in a related field would be an asset (Registered Nurse, Occupational Health Nursing, Occupational Therapist, Health Sciences); or a Certified Disability Management Professional (CMDP) designation through the National Institute of Disability Management
