Specialist, Mineral Resources - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) mandate has expanded to include new areas of resource development, including minerals. This expansion is part of the Alberta government's economic recovery plan to diversify the economy and accelerate growth in new and emerging sectors. As the Specialist, Mineral Resources, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch’s Emerging Resources team, which is a technically and culturally diverse group of geoscience professionals engaged in mineral and geothermal resource evaluation.

You will play a critical role in the evaluation of Alberta’s mineral resources by leading and participating in projects, integrating vast new and legacy data sets, and supporting the competency development of your colleagues through knowledge-sharing activities. You will actively communicate on mineral resource topics internally and externally.

What your day-to-day will look like:
- Support the development and delivery of impactful public geoscience projects designed to characterize mineral systems and mineral occurrences of Alberta through integration and interpretation of diverse datasets, and collaboration with internal staff and external stakeholders.- Develop reports, maps, journal articles, and conference presentations for public consumption.- Advise on field work planning and if possible, lead or participate in field mapping projects on the Shield in NE Alberta (hard-rock) or other parts of the province (soft-rock).- Maintain current state knowledge and awareness of minerals industry activity and related geoscience research and communicate relevant information to AGS Leadership Team or via seminars/working sessions with other branches, or with external stakeholder groups.- Lead and participate in minerals-focused knowledge sharing sessions.- Provide support for regulatory activities related to minerals.

What we’re looking for in you:
- Master of Science or PhD in Geology or other related education is preferred.- Membership or eligibility with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is preferred.- 5 - 7 years experience in industry, academia, or regulatory experience.- Experience integrating field, lab, geophysical (airborne gravity and magnetic, downhole wireline, hyperspectral core scans), and remote sensing data - in 2 and 3 dimensions - to characterize mineral systems and occurrences.- Fieldwork planning and mapping experience is preferred.- Strong understanding of mineral systems, occurrences, associations, and alterations, particularly for the types of Shield or basin-hosted mineral deposits known to occur in Alberta. Understanding of Alberta mineral resources is preferred. Past - present - prospective.- Proficient in data manipulation, visualization mapping and modelling.- Competent in igneous and metamorphic petrology OR geochemistry of basin-hosted mineral systems.

Additional Information:- Pre-placement medical required.- If participating in field work, expect to spend 1-3 weeks each summer in the field, potentially in very remote areas of Alberta. Carrying field gear and samples several kilometers, living in a field camp for 1 - 2 weeks, flying in small aircraft, and working at heights may be required.- Additional safety training will be provided as necessary, e.g., standard first aid, wilderness first aid, animal awareness, H2S Alive, etc.- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered.
