**About Us**:
Within the Ministry the Land Policy and Programs Branch leads the development of policies and legislation and manages grants and programs that support conservation and recreation. Focal areas of policy include biodiversity, Crown land recreation, rangelands, industrial & commercial development, reclamation & contaminant remediation, and pesticide policy. There is some aspect of policy related to private lands through geophysical exploration, the Surface Rights Act and working to achieve conservation of biodiversity outcomes.

This position falls within the Conservation and Recreation Policy Unit in the Public Land Policy Section of the Land Policy and Programs Branch. This unit focuses on:

- Alberta’s strategic policies regarding biodiversity conservation and recreation objectives on crown lands.
- Supporting operational management teams to develop consistent approaches in achievement of these objectives, and
- Ensuring a policy governance system is in place across programs for transparency and accountability.

**Role**:
Reporting to the Manager of Conservation and Recreation Policy, this specialized professional position is primarily responsible for leading the development and implementation of policies, tools, and strategies that support department priorities related to conservation with a focus on conservation priorities within Alberta’s protected areas network and other protected landscapes within the province such as municipal and privately-owned (e.g. Land Trust fee simple lands).

The Position works closely with the **Biodiversity Policy Analyst** who leads the development and implementation of policies, tools and strategies to support the Department’s biodiversity outcomes with a focus on priorities within Alberta’s Crown lands and private-owned working landscapes.

The work involves project management (from design to execution) to develop or amend conservation related legislation, regulations, policies, and guidelines. The position also leads the communication and training for internal and external stakeholders in new or amended policies. Work activities include development of comprehensive assessments, jurisdictional reviews with other provinces territories/ internationally, options development and development of scientifically-sound, evidence-based policy and legislation.

The work requires interaction and consultation with departments across GoA, Federal and municipal governments, indigenous communities, external interest groups, industry, and the conservation community. This position needs to manage political sensitivities related to the allowable uses and strategies within protected areas in Alberta, to maintain the conservation intent of the various designations, while meeting the various recreational experiences and tourism development Albertans are seeking.

**Duties include but not limited to**:

- Lead development of policies related to conservation objectives on Alberta’s protected areas landscapes;
- Develop and maintain relationships and strategic alliances with internal and external stakeholders to promote shared stewardship of Alberta's conservation and recreation areas.
- Identifying policy approaches (incentives, disincentives) that will achieve desired outcomes
- Support strategic policy integration activities and initiatives to ensure Alberta Environment and Protected Areas conservation interests and priorities are effectively represented in Government of Alberta cross ministry priorities, federal government initiatives and interdepartmental initiatives.
- Provide advice, assistance and leadership to staff within the Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas and the Ministry of Forestry, Parks and Tourism, on interpreting and implementing conservation-related legislation, regulations and policy initiatives.
- Provide specialized strategic advice and analysis to ministry divisions on policy, define significant and fundamental policy shifts, and develop issues, options, and context for strategic and program policy decisions.

This position is responsible for representing department interests in conservation within Alberta’s protected area network in alignment with the Departmental Business Plan.

The position requires a post-secondary degree such as a Bachelor’s in environmental/natural resource management, public policy, a related field combined with 4 years of related experience in the conservation and/or policy field and with project and issues management.
