Your Opportunity:
Working in a dynamic multi-disciplinary team, under the Provincial Population & Public Health portfolio, as a Tobacco, Smoking & Vaping Investigator you will enforce the Alberta Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act, including the prohibition of tobacco and vaping product sales to minors at tobacco and vaping product retailers in Alberta. Your duties will include inspections, investigations, supervision of youth test shoppers, and collaboration with peers and partner groups. This position requires travel throughout the province, with some overnight travel and rotational shift work, including evenings and weekends. This is a grant-funded position, with the potential to extend beyond March 31, 2025.
Description:
As a Tobacco, Smoking & Vaping Investigator, with the Tobacco, Smoking & Vaping Enforcement team, you will enforce the Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act (TSVRA). You will respond to and investigate public complaints of TSVRA infractions, provide inspection reports to tobacco and vaping product retailers, issue written warnings, and issue Part 2 and Part 3 violation tickets in accordance with the Provincial Offences Procedure Act. You will take detailed notes, document all enforcement activities and enter it into the provincial inspections electronic information system. You will be responsible for maintaining an updated premises list for scheduling and coordinating enforcement activities, including the youth test shopping events. You must handle evidence and prepare court documentation in accordance with standard and legislated practices, attend court trials, and provide testimony. You will work collaboratively with peers, municipalities, law enforcement partners, and other interested groups. You may also provide field training and expertise to Public Health Inspectors in matters such as court proceedings, submission and care of evidence, seizure and handling of products, and investigative techniques. You must be eligible for and maintain status as an Alberta Peace Officer in accordance with the Alberta Public Security Peace Officer Program.

**Required Qualifications**:
Minimum of a 2-year completed post-secondary diploma in law enforcement, criminal justice or related field, or relevant experience as a Police Officer, Alberta Peace Officer, or equivalent. Must qualify for and maintain appointment as an Alberta Peace Officer Level 2 in accordance with the Public Security Peace Officer Program (alberta.ca). Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s Licence.
**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making including appropriate use of enforcement in regulatory inspections and investigations. Ability to interpret legislation and thorough knowledge of the rules of evidence and court proceedings. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders. Ability to remain calm and self-controlled under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
**Preferred Qualifications**:
Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Training for Alberta Peace Officers or Community Peace Officers Induction. Training with additional training identified as required by the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. Familiarity with product seizures in alignment with search warrant processes. Experience in preparing court briefs and presenting evidence, including testifying in court.
