**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

This position represents a regular full time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff to work within the Island Health Mental Health and Substance Use program. Upon completion of the training the staff member will be placed into a regular full time rotation line in Mental Health and Substance Use.

Note: There is an 18 month return of service requirement as a regular/permanent employee within the Island Health Mental Health and Substance Use program for which they have been trained. Staff may move between Island Health service areas within that program. The post-basic training program requires full time attendance.

Under the direction of the program manager or designate, is responsible and accountable for providing professional mental health nursing care for clients with psychiatric, medical, substance use and psychosocial difficulties; planning and providing direct patient care utilizing the nursing process; working collaboratively within the context of a multi-disciplinary team.

The LPN operates in accordance with Island Health philosophy, operating policies, standards, unit specific protocols and competency guidelines and within the scope of practice as determine by BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant. Certification in CPR, Food Safe and Standard First Aid, other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work.

Valid Class V BC Driver's License

**Skills And Abilities**:

- Demonstrated ability to provide culturally sensitive care and services.
- Demonstrated ability to respond appropriately in urgent and emergency situations.
- Demonstrated ability to organize assigned workload and set priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
