In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
This position represents a regular full time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff to work within the Island Health Mental Health and Substance Use program. Upon completion of the training the staff member will be placed into a regular full time rotation line in Mental Health and Substance Use.
NOTE: There is an 18 month return of service requirement as a regular/permanent employee within the Island Health Mental Health and Substance Use program for which they have been trained. Staff may move between Island Health service areas within that program. The post-basic training program requires full time attendance.
Under the direction of the Coordinator and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, performs assessments, provides personal care, and performs related nursing procedures. Within the context of client and family-centered health care delivery and based on a philosophy of psychosocial rehabilitation and wellness enabling, oversees the day-to-day operation and maintenance of assigned residence. Promotes a safe, healthy and non-threatening environment that instills a sense of dignity and self-respect for all residents. Facilitates the access and egress process for the site program and assists in the development and implementation of program services. Participates in the planning, development, implementation, delivery, and modification of support services by responding to identified client needs, within the program's guidelines. Provides input into recovery plan development, evaluation and implementation. Utilizes and models the psychiatric recovery approach when working with clients. Motivates, assists, and instructs clients with the activities of daily living, reports clients' conditions, including reactions to medications. Escorts clients to off-site programs, appointments and other planned events. Provides input regarding clients' ability to assume self-care responsibility. Performs duties such as ensuring adherence to residence policies and procedures, supervising staff, ensuring residence maintenance and safety and creating statistical reports and completes administrative tasks required by the program.
The Licensed Practical Nurse, Full scope operates in accordance with the competency guidelines and full scope practice within the Standards of Practice as outline by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and according to Mental Health and Addictions operating policies and standards and unit specific protocols.
Travel may be a requirement of this position and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
- Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant.
- Completion of additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice where Mental Health and/or Substance Use are the primary diagnosis.
- Three (3) years of recent, related acute, residential or community care experience including one (1) year supervisory experience.
- Knowledge and experience working with MHSU clients.
- Familiar with the Mental Health Act, Trauma Informed Practice, knowledge of Indigenous health approaches, cultural awareness. Experience with MHSU care transitions.
- Basic Life Support, Level C certificate.
