Food Safety Manager

Tony's Meats Ltd. is located in the town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia which is home to St. Francis Xavier University and the famous X-Ring Antigonish is located 20 minutes from the ocean in multiple directions and boasts an excellent sense of community and quality of life. Established in 1963, Tony's Meats is a locally owned and operated further meat processing company with approximately 60 employees and national distribution into the retail and foodservice sectors. The company produces and markets a wide variety of raw and fully cooked meats including the company's flagship brand of donair products which is an east coast delicacy.
The company is seeking a Food Safety Manager to relocate to Antigonish and manage all aspects of the company’s food safety and quality systems including written HACCP, SQF, Halal and other programs. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Food Safety Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s food safety and quality systems including written HACCP, SQF, Halal and other programs. The Food Safety Manager will lead the quality assurance team and work collaboratively with all managers, supervisors, regulatory bodies, auditors and specialists to ensure that all products are meeting or exceeding the established standards for quality and food safety.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Ensure all certifications are maintained in good standing and external audit scores exceed 95%.
- Lead and direct members of the food safety and quality team including department organization, training, workload and task assignment.
- Provide mentorship to full time staff as well as interns and summer students
- Conduct probationary and annual performance appraisals and make recommendations for promotion to management.
- Responsible for the productivity, effectiveness and accountability of food the safety team.
- Continuously evaluate and reassess the safety and quality programs to identify areas for improvement.
- Investigate and identify root causes of quality and food safety complaints and work with all levels in the organization to implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Oversee and execute HACCP and SQF related monitoring, verification and validation activities as required
- Identify and respond to all reported deviations. Ensure deviations posing a continued risk to quality or food safety are communicated to senior management.
- Ensure required documents are organized, accurate, complete, secure and verified in a timely manner
- Work with all company staff to ensure that assigned food safety tasks are complete in an accurate and timely manner
- Execute and document an annual review of all HACCP, SQF, and related food safety programs.
- Ensure the company’s Allergen Control Program is maintained
- Provide assistance to all departments to ensure ingredients, packaging, processes and finished products meet customer specifications and regulatory requirements
- Assist with new product development, including label development, formulation specifications, HACCP updates etc.
- Provide or organize necessary HACCP, SQF, Quality and Food Safety training to all staff as required.
- Organize contract training where required
- Any other duties as assigned by Operations Manager
**Qualifications**:
- **Undergraduate degree or Masters degree** in Food Science, Biology, or other applicable discipline with a strong background in microbiology and food borne pathogen control or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3-5 years working in a supervisory or management role within a quality, food safety or food production environment preferred. Recent graduates with food manufacturing experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated experience leading teams
- Working knowledge of CFIA, HACCP and GFSI based systems (SQF preferred).
- Knowledge of Safe Food for Canadians Regulations
- Knowledge of meat processing, ready-to-eat meat and sausage production an asset
- Training and leadership experience
- Exceptional organizational and delegation skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in use of computer and Microsoft Office
