**Working for the Department**

The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the largest and most diverse on campus and offers over 120 undergradaute courses. Over 4000 student enroll in introductory courses in the Biological Sciences each year being supported by a dedicated team of academic instructors, course coordinators, laboratory technicians, and teaching assistants. Integral to our courses and programs is our dedication to hands-on learning

**Position**

The Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Laboratory Coordinator leads the laboratory offering(s) of Introductory (1st and or 2nd year) Department of Biological Sciences courses, working closely with course lecturers (instructors), teaching assistants, and laboratory technical preparation staff. The Lab Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the labs, including interacting with students, mentoring and training graduate teaching assistants, directing the work of technical staff, working collaboratively with instructors (lecturers), and collaboratively developing an effective laboratory curriculum.

**Duties**
- Mentor, train, evaluate, and advise the laboratory teaching assistants
- In collaboration with the course instructor(s) develop and prepare curriculum, write lab manual, and arrange for printing and distribution
- In collaboration with the course instructor(s) develop and prepare lab assignments and final lab exam
- Design and maintain the laboratory LMS page.
- Assign TAs to lab sections.
- Provide lecture support and maintain student grade records for graded lab components. This includes the arrangement and organization of proctors and markers for lecture exams and the duplication and machine grading of lecture exams.
- Advise students and handle student problems, absences, and academic misconduct (in collaboration with TAs and instructors).

**Minimum Qualifications**
- MSc in genetics, cellular and/or developmental biology. Teaching and research experience is essential
- Minimum 12 months of teaching experience
- Minimum 12 months of laboratory management/supervision
- Experience with mentoring and training team members and/or students
- Demonstrated experience with developing and delivering education sessions and materials
- Excellent spelling, grammar, editing, and proofreading skills
- Computing skills in word processing, spreadsheet functions, use of learning management systems
- Experience with laboratory consumable ordering (e.g. SupplyNet)
- Excellent time management, organizational, and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
- Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work effectively
- Ability to strategize and develop creative and efficient solutions
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills including a strong ability to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy
- Excellent time management, organizational, and critical thinking skills

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Administrative experience is an asset
- Demonstrated understanding of the importance of creating equitable, diverse, and inclusive practices
- Excellent tact and professionalism to facilitate negotiation, conflict resolution, and handle confidential matters
- Knowledge of the U of A’s policies, procedures, and collective agreements
