**Department summary**

**Duties**
- Plan, coordinate, execute and follow-up on lab research activities, ensuring that all activities are compliant with university policy. Conduct safety-related activities such as hazard assessments and training for new personnel.
- Communicate regularly with project investigators and other project personnel, including collaborators.
- Carry out experiments and assist project personnel such as students and post-doctoral fellows with laboratory experimentation. Assist with routine sample preparation according to SOPs, including the collection and routine analysis of samples generated through laboratory experimentation.
- Conduct data collection, performing data entry and routine analyses. Prepare written reports providing detailed information on laboratory research activities, with a focus on methodologies user for experiment execution and sample collection.
- Assist with plant experiments conducted in phytotron facilities at the University of Alberta and with biochemical experiments conducted on campus at the University of Alberta.
- Maintain the operational status of laboratory research equipment and place orders for required equipment and supplies as required for laboratory research.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- A minimum of a 4-year degree in biological sciences or equivalent
- Familiarity with workplace health and safety best practices required. Completion of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Concepts in Biosafety and Laboratory and Chemical Safety training.
- Demonstrated experience with protein biochemistry and corresponding analytical techniques.
- Experience processing large sample cohorts.
- Demonstrated prior experience working with and processing plants and plant samples.
- Demonstrated abilities with respect to organization attentiveness to detail and ability to conduct work accurately.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstration of positive people skills facilitating teamwork and collaboration with others

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Experience with sterile tissue culture.
- Experience with molecular cloning.
- Demonstrated experience with automated sample processing platforms.
