The Specialist, Neurodivergent Exceptionalities position is an important role in FNESC’s Special
Education department. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Special Education.

The Specialist, Neurodivergent Exceptionalities is part of the Special Education team and is
responsible for coordinating and implementing programs, projects, and services designed to build
the capacity of staff in First Nation schools to better support students with developmental
disabilities and exceptionalities related to neurodiverstiy. These exceptionalities may include but
is not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit and disorder, or fetal alcohol
syndrome.

Since 1992, FNESC, led by a strong and diverse board of over 125 First Nations community
representatives, has worked in partnership with the First Nations School Association (FNSA), and
the Indigenous Adult Higher Learning Association (IAHLA). Communications, research,
partnership-building, resource development and advocacy are all part of the work we do to
advance issues in First Nations education.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Connecting schools with service providers who can help with access to additional

support for students and families;
- Implementing professional development sessions to support First Nation schools with

students who have or are suspected of having neurodivergent exceptionalities;
- Supporting First Nation school staff (principals, teachers, Learning Assistance Teachers,

and Education Assistants) by sharing information and responding to questions as

needed that are related to students who have or are suspected of having neurodivergent
exceptionalities;
- Assisting school principals in identifying relevant training and professional development

opportunities for First Nation school staff to build their capacity to support students who
have neurodivergent exceptionalities;
- Supporting the SEP Networks as needed.

**What We’re Looking For**:

- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the field of special education support

preferably in school setting supporting students with developmental disabilities and
exceptionalities related to executive functioning;
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field with a major in Special

Education and/or Special Education certification and training;
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of supports available to support students with

developmental disabilities and exceptionalities related to executive functioning in the
Province of BC;
- Valid drivers’ license and satisfactory criminal record check;
- An understanding of First Nations education issues.

**Hours**

This is a salaried full-time position. Occasional travel is required throughout the province of BC.

**Location**:
Anywhere in British Columbia that might be suitable for FNESC’s needs.

**FNESC requires that all FNESC staff have at least two doses of COVID-19 vaccine for two**
**reasons: First, because FNESC takes its responsibility to create and maintain a healthy**
**workplace very seriously. And, second, because many of our staff attend First Nations**
**communities in-person. Some First Nations have unique requirements and vulnerabilities**
**related to communicable diseases like COVID-19, and FNESC always respects the needs**
**of First Nations.**
