**Position Summary**

Based in the reception and the Community Access Hub, the CS Ambassador will continually monitor and actively patrol the community centre, and pro-actively engage clients, participants, visitors, and staff in order to develop a positive safety culture. They would create opportunities to enhance the user experience by making connections with those in the Centre and, where possible, alleviating some of the stresses and anxiety through respectful interpersonal interactions.

**Education and Experience**:
Qualifications:

- High School Diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education preferred)
- First aid/CPR certification
- Crisis Prevention & Intervention certification
- De-escalation certification

**Experience**:

- 3 -5 years of experience in mental health, community services, and/or health and safety fields strongly preferred
- Experience working with diverse and marginalized populations

Required Knowledge:

- Knowledge of the issues facing persons living with mental health and addictions
- Knowledge of available community resources

**Required Skills**:

- The ability to exercise sound judgment and effective interpersonal skills including the ability to appropriately manage hostile/aggressive/inappropriate behaviour is a critical skillset for this position.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- An ability to maintain an empathetic approach to others even in situations of high stress and conflict.
- Acute sense of judgment, tact, and diplomacy
- The ability to effectively relate to and communicate with persons from the more “marginalized” populations
- Physical abilities to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to speak a second language is an asset

**Responsibilities**:

- Proactively uses supportive verbal techniques and engages community resources in order to identify appropriate strategies aimed at the de-escalation of potentially violent behavior.
- Develops relationships and maintains liaison with program staff, students and volunteers, to ensure effective communication and consultation in the development of appropriate support and/or intervention strategies.
- Warn persons of rule infractions or violations of Centre policies in order to preserve safety & order
- Perform wellness checks on individuals who may be experiencing homelessness or have complex needs.
- Conducts and documents a regular census of the number of persons in the Community Access Hub.
- Maintains basic data concerning the number of client contacts made during each shift and completes Incident Reports following each serious incidents.
- Develops relationships with regular clients and visitors, and through consultation with staff develops customized “Approach Plans” that identify strategies for safely and effectively managing individual clients and visitors who are known to present a potential risk of violence.
- Participates in Post-Event Team Briefings/De-briefings and provides input into client/visitor behavior management planning as required.
- Reports observed and suspected security concerns to management and/or law enforcement as appropriate, but does not directly engage in security related interventions unless necessary to provide for the safety of another person.
- Acts as the Security Lead within the Centre to promote a therapeutic approach to clients and visitors, and is a member of the Emergency Procedures Working Group
- Provides way-finding and general information assistance as necessary.
- Other related duties as assigned by management
- **In order to establish and maintain a positive rapport with regular clients and visitors, the Community Safety Ambassador is not intended to get directly involved in physical interventions unless required to do so in order to preserve the safety of themselves or another person. Whenever possible, the Community Safety Ambassador will engage the Code White protocol in order to manage physically aggressive or threatening behavior.**
