The Lab Safety Specialist collaborates with consults and key stakeholders, including Senior Leadership, Union partners, Joint Health and Safety Committee, Frontline Staff, Subject Matter Experts, like-organizations, and Regulatory Bodies, to promote health and safety in the wider context of business processes, including market influences.

The Lab Safety Specialist is responsible for overseeing the Biosafety Program and for the organization and maintenance of the Human Pathogen and Toxins Licence to remain in good standing with the Public Health Agency of Canada. The Lab Safety Specialist provides ongoing support to Staff and Leadership, by providing advice, support, and direction in risk assessment and controls, management systems, technical standards and knowledge, and health and wellness for the work environment.

The Lab Safety Specialist partners with provincial and municipal associates, to analyze evidence-based research and subsequently applies learnings to the organization’s operations. Research is critically evaluated and documented for the ongoing maintenance of the hospital’s safety programs.

With a strong preventative focus, the Lab Safety Specialist will partner with departments to assess, and evaluate, new and complex risks. The specialist will administer reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis for the elimination and reduction of work-related injuries or illnesses, near misses, critical injuries, or property damage. The specialist is responsible for the mitigation of LHSC’s financial and reputational risk related to biosafety within the broader community.

**Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology or Bachelor's Degree in Science
- Community College Diploma in Occupational Health or Advanced Ergonomics or Medical Lab Technologist required
- Master's Degree in Science preferred
- Minimum 3 years experience in similar role
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification preferred
- Biosafety Officer (BSO) designation prefered
- Demonstrated proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, OneNote)
- Experience with AEMS, PSHSA, and MSDS online
- Advanced understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Pathogens and Toxins Act and related regulations and guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service
- Proficient ability to develop effective working relationships
- Demonstrated proficient ability to establish and maintain communication lines necessary for the promotion of Health and Safety Programs
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated in dealing with a wide variety of contacts and sensitive issues
- Proficient knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and policy and procedures; Joint Health and Safety Certification preferred
- Proficient problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated proficient ability to organize and prioritize work while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

**Immunization Requirements**:
Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:

- Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;
- Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
- Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
