**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reports to the SI Leader, Chronic Disease Management and Nutrition Therapy Services. Utilizes advanced clinical techniques in the area of diabetes management and nutritional/diabetes counseling to individual and client groups. Acts as a clinical resource for dietitians and other health care providers in the hospital and community. Provides in-services and education about diabetes to staff, students, physicians and community agencies. Plans, implements, and evaluates nutritional care for ambulatory patients according to guidelines established by the Department and/or Community Health Programs. Instructs and counsels patients and families regarding appropriate nutritional requirements, clinical diet regimes, food planning and preparation, and carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustments. Travels throughout the Health Authority.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with a major in dietetics/nutrition or equivalent. Completion of recognized dietetic internship in a accredited hospital. Current Registration with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia (CDBC) Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Certificate; and Two (2) years recent, related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Demonstrated knowledge of the current theories, technologies and practices in diabetes care. Demonstrated knowledge of adult education principles. Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.

**Skills And Abilities**:

- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with patients and their families, members of the health care team, departmental employees, students and representatives of community agencies.
- Ability to teach using adult education principles.
- Ability to coordinate activities and maintain liaison among medical and nursing staff, patients and and/or support agencies.
- Ability to organize workload, set priorities and work with mínimal supervision.
