Reporting to the Guthrie Therapeutic Community (GTC) Program Manager, the Addictions Counsellor will play a vital role in guiding and supporting residents in the Therapeutic Community Program. The Addiction Counsellor is responsible for promoting positive life skills and supporting the reduction of the negative impact of alcohol and drug abuse, promote "Right Living" concepts, peer-led activities, and accountability among residents. The Addictions Counsellors will provide group and individual support, as well as participate in case planning.
- Guide and support residents in the Therapeutic Community Program.
- Provide person centered, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessments, treatments, case management, crisis intervention, education, and referral services to the residents.
- Promote "Right Living" concepts, peer-led activities, and accountability among residents.
- Provide group and individual support to residents.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care for residents.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of resident progress and treatment interventions.
- Facilitate psychoeducational groups and therapeutic activities related to addiction recovery.
- Assist in crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed.
- Enforce policies and procedures to ensure high quality of care for residents and physical and mental safety of residents and staff.
- Stay updated on current research, best practices, and evidence-based approaches in addiction treatment techniques.
- Maintain a caseload which includes managing case file work and writing resident reports (i.e., termination/discharge, incident, or referral).
- Maintain all case notes and updates as per JHSVic and BC Corrections requirements.
- A minimum of 2 years of "lived" experience around addiction and recovery is preferred.
- Someone with a passion for and interest in working with vulnerable populations.
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Human Services or Social Services, counselling, or relevant discipline. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a therapeutic community or residential addictions treatment facility.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience facilitating programs aimed at treatment and sustained recovery for addiction.
- Master’s degree in social work and or Counselling will be an asset.
**Skills and Abilities**
- Strong understanding of addiction and the recovery process
- Experience in developing effective treatment plans.
- Experience writing assessments and reports to monitor resident progress.
- Knowledge of therapeutic community principles and peer support models.
- Ability to build rapport and establish therapeutic relationships with residents.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to facilitate group sessions and engage residents in meaningful discussions.
- Strong assessment and case management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Compassion, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude.
- Cultural competence and ability to work with a diverse population.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical guidelines.

Hours of work will be **35 hours per week**, Mon to Fri, and can vary between 7:30 and 20:00 on any day during the week. Most tasks for this position are completed during the workweek, however occasional evening, weekend, and Statutory holiday work may be required. Occasional travel to Victoria will be required.
