The Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough is a vibrant department organized into distinct disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of study. In addition to providing students with deep grounding in one or more disciplinary traditions, the Department also fosters multidisciplinary research at all levels. The Department of Philosophy is a growing research and teaching intensive department. We teach a wide constituency of students at UTSC from specialists in philosophy, double majors in philosophy and another area such as psychology or political science, to large numbers of students who combine their primary field of study with a minor in philosophy. We provide a full spectrum of courses in the major areas of philosophy such as ethics, metaphysics, theory of knowledge and of mind, and aesthetics. We also teach a range of applied courses with a focus on biomedical ethics.

**Your opportunity**:
Under the supervision of the Business Officer, the Financial Assistant is responsible for a variety of finance and accounting assignments for the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies (90%) and the Department of Philosophy (10%). Responsibilities include completion and/or audit of all expense reimbursements and invoices, and reconciliation of FIS accounts, timesheet collection and verification for casuals and work-study for payroll processing, monthly Statement of Accounts, P-Card statements, ensuring compliance with University ‘s financial guidelines and procedures. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for the analysis and creation of various financial reports which provide data used in long term and short-term strategic planning, budgeting, modelling and forecasting for the Departments. The incumbent works closely with the Business Officer to ensure business transactions are aligned with the general accepted accounting principles, the University’s financial and purchasing guidelines as well as funding rules. The incumbent is also responsible for asset management for the department including purchasing, inventory, records and maintenance and space coordination.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Preparing expense reimbursements and journal entries
- Preparing accounts payable / account receivable according to the University Guide to Financial Management
- Checking that proper approvals are obtained prior to processing transactions
- Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
- Recording detailed transactions for departments operating and research accounts
- Generating standard financial reports regularly and reconcile them with actual back up documents

**Essential Qualifications**:

- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in a related field (e.g. accounting, finance) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years related experience in accounting/finance/analysis.
- Experience in related administrative support required.
- High level of knowledge with FIS, HRIS and RIS preferred, or equivalent information systems is essential.
- Must have an aptitude for numbers, be analytical and have strong problem solving abilities.
- Strong communication skills (both oral and written).
- Ability to prioritize and complete many competing demands in order to meet strict deadlines with keen attention to detail.
- Must be highly service-oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work well in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability exercise tact, good judgment and diplomacy when dealing with staff, faculty and students.
