Overview:
**Term: 22 months**

The Assistant Editor is primarily responsible for allocating work to associate editors, co-editors and the managing editor in overseeing works for publication in the academic peer-reviewed journal Journal of Phycology for the Phycological Society of America. This position is responsible for a range of administrative duties to facilitate editorial function of the journal, which are in accordance with the society and journal’s goals and objectives.

**Responsibilities**:
Manage the editorial production schedule
- Organize articles for publication, and develop timelines, budgets, etc.
- Assign new submissions to Associate Editors; facilitate the peer review process; line-editing of all accepted manuscripts for formatting and Journal consistency; review proofs for formatting and consistency
- Work with the Managing Editor to assemble bi-monthly issues (6 per year); and provide general assistance through the review and production phases of the publication process. Most of these activities are done through Scholar One/Manuscript Central
- Assistant Editor also works with the designated Publisher and Production Editor from Wiley to handle publishing and the Journal of Phycology online database
- Maintain records of all editorial activities

Administrative responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with other staff and researchers to write, review, and edit material to ensure consistency and high-quality content
- Prepare twice-annual reports for the Managing Editor to present at the mid-year and annual meetings of the executive committee of the Phycological Society of America

Organize and participate in meetings
- Prepare meeting agendas, organize teleconferences, etc. for the Editorial Team
- Plan the Editorial lunch held at the annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America
- Contact Editorial team (AEs, EB, Co-editors) regarding reimbursement for annual meeting and directs to Treasurer

Qualifications:

- Master’s degree with related experience. PhD in Biology or related discipline is preferred
- 1-2 years editorial management experience preferred, preferably in a related role
- Experience working across different aspects of communications as well as liaising with multiple leaders and individuals
- Expertise in critical evaluation of all stages of research through a biological lens (design, measurement and evaluation)
- Meet deadlines through effective time management skills
- Expertise with word processing and data analysis software
- Excellent decision-making and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work well independently with mínimal supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
