Adult Day Program Educational Assistant

This part time position provides direct program support to participants attending the adult day program. Each day will be filled with fun and educational programming. Participants will learn tools and strategies to become responsible for their own well-being and build competence in managing their day-to-day lives. Our group strive for independence by working on functional life skills, social skills, and peer relationships with the support of compassionate and experienced staff.

The Adult Day Program Educational Assistant is supervised by the Program Manager.

This part-time position is 20-30 hours a week (4-6 hrs/day) between the hours of 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday, excluding Statutory holidays.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Your daily tasks are:

- Help plan and prep lesson plans for each day.
- Assist teachers implement lesson plans according to the participant’s needs and the goals of the program.
- Get to know each of the students and adapt activities to their level.
- Assist students with bathroom care.
- Meet each student where they are at cognitively, physically, and emotionally.
- Ensure the program space and materials are organized, set-up, and cleaned-up daily.
- Maintain quality care and always ensure safety of the participants.
- Demonstrate healthy behaviours and interaction skills.
- Collaborate and share new ideas with the other staff.
- Any other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 2-years of experience working with individuals with developmental delays. Preferably those with Down syndrome.
- Experience working with people with disabilities, (in a classroom setting is an asset)
- Ability to relate and connect well with children, youth, and adults.
- Able to think outside the box.
- Be a team player, able to work in harmony with fellow staff and volunteers.
- Knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of different cultures and lifestyles.
- Able to work under pressure, make sound decisions, and exercise mature judgment.
- Self-motivated, able to work both independently with mínimal supervision and as an integral part of a team.
- Extraordinary commitment to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Ability to manage crisis situations efficiently and effectively.
- Be fun and creative.
- MUST be willing to assist individuals with bathroom care, with sensitivity and respect for their dignity and privacy.

EDUCATION
- Diploma in Educational Assistant, Disability Studies (or other related studies)
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred.

FORMAL TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENCES
- Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector
- Current First Aid & CPR
- Valid AB driver’s license in good standing and has use of an automobile.
- Additional training in working with people with Down syndrome and / or Non-violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset.

COMPENSATION
- $21/hr

Program location is at 9139 39 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB
