**Position**

As a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team member reporting to the Manager, Regulatory and Consulting Services the Technical Safety Advisor (Advisor) works with clients across all U of A campuses, including faculty, staff and students and a range of external agencies. With the support of a team of health and safety professionals, the Advisor promotes the university’s Culture of Care, contributes to the development and implementation of the institutional Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), assists clients in the interpretation of health and safety legislation and university policy and procedure and in implementing health and safety best practices through the provision of guidance, tools, templates and training. The Advisor has experience in risk management, the identification and mitigation of a broad range of hazards and has specific competencies in the area of biological, radiation, and laser safety.

**Duties**
- Promote the university's Culture of Care and contribute to the Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) development and implementation.
- Assist with biological laboratory federal certifications and facility testing for biocontainment research
- Contribute to Biosafety Committee activities, including document development and review
- Help maintain radiation safety processes, including hazard identification and mitigation
- Support laser/X-ray inspection program administration
- Assist with Radiation/Laser Safety Committee activities and documentation
- Triage incidents reported through ARISE, manage Fresh Service ticketing, and oversee HSE-related ARISE change requests

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Diploma or post-secondary degree in a science or health science discipline.
- Three to five years of experience working in a health and safety role, preferably in academia or science/laboratory-related research environments.
- Knowledge and understanding of Health, Safety and Environment Management Systems.
- Knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal acts, regulations, codes, standards, bylaws, and guidelines associated with bio, radiation and other safety hazards.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Knowledge and understanding of microbiology and/or radiation safety and related policies, standards, and practices in a post-secondary research setting.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups.
