**Your role**

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Reporter / Editor that is primarily assigned to digital platforms (cbc.ca & social). This position is based in Hamilton, Ontario.

An exceptional journalist and a self-starter, you must be able to analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom. You’re interested in and familiar with all of the platforms, but most of all, you are digital first. You know how to write, edit, and package digital news, including video content. You are focused on increasing audience engagement through visual storytelling. You know the ins and outs of social media, and you are comfortable chasing your own stories, shooting and editing video, as well as writing them based on material gathered by your colleagues. You collaborate to help get stories across the finish line. You have a better than average knowledge of social media, photography and video, and desire to deliver excellent journalism.

You are excited by new story treatments and will inspire others to do that same. And you have an understanding of the geography and culture of Hamilton and the Niagara Region. You are committed to seeking out stories from equity-deserving groups and Indigenous communities.

You will uphold and demonstrate the highest of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices in your work. You also live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

**Key Tasks**:

- Pitch, source, research and fact-check to produce short and long-form enterprise articles with an understanding of alternative digital storytelling formats that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
- Respond quickly to report on breaking news events as they unfold on all platforms (digital, social, radio & video).
- Repurpose content from other CBC platforms, including writing, packaging stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio and graphics using the latest information and audience metrics.
- Keep up with the latest social media trends that could be used to grow our audience and add value to our journalism.
- Use your experience and interest in data journalism to dig into open source data and other sources to write interesting and unique stories based on data and help build interactive charts.
- Copy edit and publish digital content from other writers.
- Engage with community members to help expand CBC Hamilton’s audiences.
- Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
- Strong understanding of online news, including social media, methods of online content distribution and digital storytelling techniques.
- Knowledge of standard design and video editing software including Final Cut Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Excel and Datawrapper.
- Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.
- Strong, proven connections to the communities we serve in Hamilton and area, including those which may be underserved.
- Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.
- Ability to take compelling photos and video for use on multiple platforms. Video gathering and editing skills is an asset.
- A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
- Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
- Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
